500 miles a day will not leave you much time for sight seeing. No advice for you but maybe a suggestion. When we traveled up the coast to visit Maine, we went west to east across Long Island and then picked up the ferry at Orient Point and rode that across to New London. It was a nice route and allowed us to miss a lot of the congestion around NYC. Have fun.
Coming off the ferry in New London.

Longest single day for me was 435 miles. We stopped about every 130 miles to stretch, bathroom, etc. I've found that I ride smarter with breaks. A couple of times either from heat or not taking breaks I found myself doing dumb stuff so I try to be smarter now!

Thanks, everybody.
We do plan on stopping every couple of hours, as well as a good long lunch stop both days. It'll take us a while but better safe than sorry.
I've also heard to stick close to the speed limit on this trip, to avoid incurring any unnecessary expenses, ifyaknowhatimean.
I ride until I need gas.
We ride 1.5 hours and stop for a "potty break"!
After 400 miles, riding stops being fun and starts being work.
My longest day ever on a bike was 877 miles.
THat was a long time ago (1980)and I was a lot younger and lot dumber!
Two years ago, me ane my wife (riding two bikes) rode 715 miles in one long day. She was proud and I was proud of her but that was a one time thing, at least for me.
The main thing is to limit your breaks to 10 minutes or so.
You gotta keep those wheels turning if you're trying to make miles
Agreed....when you stop every 100 miles or so just to step off the bike and get back on you will be amazed how much better your reaction times will be. Anything 250 to 300 without a break becomes hypnotic
My first long trip 2 yrs ago i went to every fuel fill before i stopped.WOW,what a mistake. My *** hurt so bad that first day.Now i stop every 100 or so and that is much better for me now.I'm leaving for N.C. in two weeks going down the Blue ridge.
