Default Nearest open plains riding to NY?

So I’m on Long Island and am looking to plan some long rides in preparation for getting my FXDB (ready to pull the trigger as soon as the right one comes along…) and I’m getting some great ideas for PS and VA here…

I’ve travelled quite a bit around New England and it's very nice but its also densely forested, whereas I generally prefer riding roads thru open spaces such as open plains and deserts… where’s the nearest open “prairie” like region to NY?

Can't answer your question, but I had to chuckle a little.
I live on the wide open prairie area of Minnesota and I often complain that I have to drive across the boring open plains to try to find some good riding, like a dense forest. Familiarity breeds contempt I guess.

Parts of Ohio, Il, and Indiana are pretty flat. Kansas and Nebraska sound more to me what you are looking for without going all the way west to get the real "open prairie" riding.

I can ride to Denver in a little over 12 hours from here. I can see the Rockies for the last four hours or so before I get there.

Google Earth is a great tool to see the terrain, elevation, vegatation, size of the cities or anything else you want to do a tour from your computer anywhere in the world.

I agree that seeing something you aren't used to seeing on a road trip, especially a bike trip is what makes it so great.

Good luck. Have as many great trips as you can.

Dennis

I have to agree with that google earth thing, also I found if you go to Google Maps, put your starting point and end point, hit get directions, once that is up, hit the little "3D" button next to Directions, it will put you on the route, and show you the layout by taking you on the trip. Maybe been there for years, but I just found it !
