Leaving for a 10 day trip at the end of the month. Will be tenting it with my son. Any good "must see" and "must ride" reccomendations from those that have been there?
Starting plan from central illinois is to head accross Iowa and South Dakota and get to Cody by the second day. Then looking for good rides in the area, heading to the Tetons and then up to Rt 2 and over skirting the Canadian border back towards middle upper Wisconsin and back down to Illinois.
Wow thats a fast trip. You must find the Beartooth pass and cross it. Go to Beartooth Harley in Cody and get the local favorite ride map. Take plenty of warm clothes if your camping. It will be cold this time of year. Keep everyone posted with pictures.
Rt. 2 in ND will take you through the biggest oil boom in the country - major heavy truck traffic and VERY limited overnight accommodations, neither motels or camping. Just a shout out.
I have ridden up to the Yellowstone area twice. The Tetons are great to look at but, all we did was ride on the rode adjacent to the Tetons and that was it. I don't know that it is a great ride. We did run over into Idaho at Jackson and up the west side of the Tetons. Just saying that there is a huge amount of country to cover in this area, so plan your ride. Beartooth, Chief Joseph, Red Lodge are all good places to visit. Don't miss Devil's Tower when heading west. The Black Hills offers plenty of good rides.
Riding in early June in the higher elevations, especially farther north, you may be riding in snow, and definitely some cold temps especially late at night or early morning hours.
Take appropriate cold weather riding/camping gear.
If you camp in the parks (I would suggest the more crowded the better) let the Rangers know where you will be and be alert to the presence of bears.
If it was me, I'd hang in the lower elevations.
THe Utah Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon would be good trip and you be facing the threat of freezing to death!
Ya it will definately be cold up there this time of year. But as mentioned the beartooth is a must see if your going to be there and if you are that far drop into glacier. I know glacier isn't open yet, is the beartooth?
Beartooth Pass usually opens Memorial Day weekend depending on snow conditions, you will need to check to see what roads in and around the park are actually open before you head out. http://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/beartooth/#
July 6 2010 the Beartooth got 6 inches of snow. It was off the roads 2 days later and we rode over the pass. It was great. BRP is nice but no comparison to the rockies...
