Default Galveston Texas

Going to Galveston Texas next week, any good suggestions on rooms close to the beach and places to eat? Any suggestions on places to stay away from also.

I used to live in Houston. Check out the Kemah Boardwalk on your way down.

I've only been to Galveston twice for the Lone Star rally. Can't recommend a place to stay, but I can recommend a place to hang out and get a drink. Check out The Spot. It's across the street from the beach, has lots of decks to sit and check out the sights. They serve food, but I was always on a liquid diet while there. I'm sure they have a website or something, check it out.

I would avoid Kemah... Too commercialized.
In Galveston, check out The Spot on the Seawall for a good burger. Go a bit further east on the Seawall to Benno's for some good seafood or back west to Casey's for fresh seafood. You'll want to head west on Seawall Boulevard and cross San Luis Pass (take $2 for toll for each bike each way) and ride the Blue Water Highway about 26 miles or so along the coast.
For places to stay, there is a whole assortment of places and styles on the island. Don't forget to jump back across to the north side of the Island to the Strand and the port side with other seafood options. If you are looking to see some local flair, park the bike and walk both blocks either side of The Strand... Good place to find out what to see --- and what to avoid.

I live on the Mainland and work in Galveston, used to live there for 12 years. There are hotels/motels to suit any budget on the Seawall. The restaraunts mentioned above are good.

I actually JUST did the Blue Water run this past Sunday for the first time- was a lot of fun!

If you google Galveston carvings, it will give you a list of all the Ike'd live oaks that were carved into sculptures- great way to see some cool carvings and a bit of the historical Victorian homes...

Stay away from Joe's Crabshack, Brickhouse.

Good Mexican- "The Original", Tortugas (a chain), Napalitos on B'way.

A good joint (Italian, muffalettas) is "Sonny's" on 19th - good food and beer.

Other good New Orleans style Seafood- Willie G's, Landries, Fisherman's Warf, and Fish tales

Consistently good steak- Saltgrass...

The Loading Dock is a good biker friendly bar on 25th.

Down on the Strand, Yaga's is good "trendy" food, most of the others are tourist traps. Murphy's on 22nd and O'Mally's on Post Ofice- good Irish pubs with food. Old Cellar on Post Office has about 100 taps.

If you head out west past seawall (also part of Blue Water run) good stops are Woody's for a biker friendly place and Cafe Michael Burger for good German food.

Feel free to PM if you want any more info...

What Jim said; I also 2nd Saltgrass (great chain), then Gaido's and Fisherman's Wharf.

If you're looking for just a room, anything along the seawall will work out.

+1 for the Kemah Board Walk. Some good places to eat there. Like the Aquarium restaraunt. It expensive though. And +1 for the Spot also. The Spot has really good burgers.
