Rode to the top in August last year. The last half mile to a mile is unpaved but not quite gravel. More like hard packed sand. Keep your distance from whoever is in front of you and keep your momentum up. Well worth the trip.

Rode up Monday 06/11 on bikes only day. Hard pack gravel near the top, then paved again to the parking area which is gravel and baseball size stones. Saw some crappy riders and a guy dump it in the parking area. Zero visibility at the top but could see for miles near Tuckerman's. Had an awesome ride and would recommend it to anyone. Take the Katamangus highway while you are in the area.

It's been a few years but we had a blast taking our bikes to the top. Here's our bikes in the parking lot looking down at the clouds.
If you're worried about the gravel, maybe one of the cog rail trains would be almost as much fun.

But wait - there's more...
There's more than Mt Washington around there. Rt 302 (Crawford Notch), Rt 16 (Pinkham Notch to Mt Washington), I-93 thru Franconia Notch, and Rt 112 = The Kancamagus. Ride all that stuff, then turn around and ride it all again from the other direction. It's the best riding in the Northeast.

Didn't do the autoroad this year , but stopped for a beer at the MW Hotel on their outstanding back porch ... Took this pic on the way in ..
