If you can, ride it on a weekday, summer weekends are busy. Winthrop is a real touristy town, not sure of the draw. There is a red caboose railcar in a little town, (forget the name) has pretty good BBQ. The road on a nice day has good views and is a nice ride, can have a strong state patrol presence. There are a couple nice state parks along there to stay at, I was a camphost at the Rasor state park, nice small quiet park with clean facilities.
I do it a couple of times a year. It's a great road, can't go wrong in nice weather. Lots of things to see, Diablo Dam, Winthrop, Twisp, over the mountain to Omak. You can take it to Sand Point, Id or go south on 155 along Banks Lake.
I just spent a night at the Idle-a-While in Twisp. Older motel and cabins but motorcycle friendly and just a walk across the river bridge to the Twisp River Pub.
Watch for deer especially morning and evening. They are like rats along the valley floor.
I stopped at the Que Car barbecue in Marblemount, it is the one in a caboose, on the South side of the Highway next to the gas station, Shell I think. Decent sandwich and a good place to meet other riders.
Stop at the Ross lake overview. If you find my molded ear plug, you can sent it to me.
Stop off at Eagles In Flight, a small independent motorcycle shop on the south side in Concrete.
You can pick up the South Skagit Hwy in Concrete for a more scenic ride along the river into Sedro Woolley. Lots of nice rides around 530 to Darrington. On the Twisp, Winthrop side, the back way from Twisp to Carlton, over Loup loup, up (and back) 30 mile creek and a run up to Sun Mountain all are good short rides. If you ride 155 to Omak, don't forget a wave to Sasquatch, located at Disautel Pass (North side just as you approach the summit).

Hmmm, might have to check it out, love the Pacific NW. thinking about 97 thru Ore and Wa to Hwy 2 to 530 to 20 East to 95 and back down thru Id. I can make 5-6 days out of that.
Riding across 20, if it is your first time plan to take most of the day. The touristy and maybe not so touristy things are, filling up fuel in Marblemount. I think that is the last place for gas heading toward Winthrop. A stop at the overlook at Diablo lake, there is also restroom facilities there(non flushing type)
The flushing type can be found at Newhalem,Wa. there is a general store there and they have pretty good fudge. The speed
limit drops suddenly to 25mph. The traffric officers have been known to hide behind the welcome sign and step out with the radar at the last second.
Yes the deer can be thick and unpredictable.
One of the best rides in the Pacific NW. After you go through Winthrop & get to Pateros you have many, many more enjoyable miles ahead of you. I haven't been over Hwy 20 yet this year & looks like it will be mid August for me which is fine, it will be HOT! Enjoy the ride!
