I know this an older thread but why start a new one. I use LidSaks to haul my tent and sleeping bag on the saddle bags. Works great. Also picked up on ebay a T-Baggs tour pack cheap. Straps are just long enough to tie down to the bag protecter bars. Plenty of room for anything I THINK I need.

I probably had to much but worked out fine..

Cooler
Rollup /Blowup Mat 2lbs
Sleep Bag 3 lbs
Tent. 6 lbs

Stealth Camped..

Tourpak had clothes in it. On top of it was the sleep bag and a small bag..

Without the tourpak I would have been fine with the same amount

Slept on Railroad type rocks...with no problem

Default camping on a budget

I went to a bike rally but had a few large trucks to haul everyone's gear. 2nd year I wanted light and self sufficient. I ride a FXR that is shorter than a FLT, limited room. I already had 1978 King of the Road FLT hard bags and made the brackets to fit. On top of the brackets I made racks to align up with the fender rack I made that just clears the fender when loaded.

I painted it as it is only temporary.

I carry a large, very strong tent made for storm winds. I do not have a photo of the set up but I can almost stand up inside of my Nemo Asashi 4P (Made in USA) with optional garage (good for a porch). I also purchased the 2 foot prints also. I purchased 6 large plastic & 10 small quality aluminum stakes and 100' of parachute cord (just in case).

I purchased 2 cheep HF tarps that cost $4/ea and put that under the foot print to keep it clean for easy break-down. I keep them inside of a Wally-Mart $1.00 cooler. A great GCI Pico telescoping chair is not cheep but really is the best (IMO) that folds up really small in its own bag about the size of a laptop. I bring it inside as the tent is way big enough even w/o the garage.

* A queen size air bed and a 12V air compressor (start your bike and run or it will kill your battery) that plugs into my trickle charger pig-tail (charges/runs lap-top & cell phone with a cigarette lighter plug).
* A compact sleeping bag with ground cloth & blanket (under the air mattress) and a pillow case (use cloths as a filler). I use a one sided waterproof blanket that folds up tight and a small throw over for extra warmth.
* A few cheep ($4) HF small LED's with hanger is great.

use a quality cooler that fits inside of one saddle bag for drinks which holds a 1/2 case w/Ice & is leak proof. I use the 2 OEM saddle bag liners and use them as storage when I get there. A few plastic bags are great for used/dirty clothing. I went to the flea market and found this to hold this 65# cheep $10 (19"L X 15"D) gym bag. The bag acts as storage when you get there to clean up the clutter.
The rack design gets the center of gravity as low as possible which I find important to me.

My idea of camping is staying at the Holiday Inn Express. But I can do brain surgery in the morning.

That way they'll stay high and dry if you run into any rain. For my clothes I put every thing in 1 gallon ziploc bags, again everything stays dry.
Yup. Dry bags, or one big one.

If it is above 40 or 50 degrees, I recommend a camping hammock. They are compact, easy to set up and very, very comfortable - especially for older backs. You don't have to get onto and up from the ground, another benefit. It also functions as a camp chair. I use a Skeeter Beater Pro from Grand Trunk, but others work well too. If you are thinking: "a hammock, won't you fall out?" or: "what if it rains?" then you haven't any idea of how camping hammocks work. Check into it, they are such a great way to camp. You'll see. No need for air mattresses, or heavy, bulky camping stuff. Just comfort and convenience.

My $.02.

When you compress the air becomes very small. In fact, it is more than I kcal rest.

Those Big Agnes' seem a little pricey, but it sounds like they might be worth it.
you can inflate the sleep pads a little more for some added comfort. Just blow some more air in them before capping the valve.
