Had that a couple years ago. Hit the perfect weekend with the leaves at their peak. Two days later-6 inches of snow.

The Hisega Lodge is a great place with a rich history. Nice choice!

Where would you recommend to stay just east of the Badlands?

Thanks again.

I've stayed at Graham's Best Western in Murdo, it was nice. Wall has plenty of places; get a Buffalo burger!

Don't know if you're interested in this type of thing, but since you're going to be in the area, the NPS has made a park/display out of one of the Minuteman II ICBM sites that I used to work on. Here is the link: http://www.nps.gov/mimi/index.htm

Prepare for ANY kind of weather. Up in the Hills it will probably get pretty chilly at night. Right now this morning it's 44 degrees out.

Another nice place to stay just outside of Keystone is The Powderhouse Lodge, good food and nice cabins. Link: http://www.powderhouselodge.com/

Ride safe and enjoy.

September is the best time for a Black Hills trip. I go every year, usually the last week of Sept. It can get chilly some mornings, so pack accordingly, but then usually gets warm quickly. Had frost on my bike one morning !

Lodging won't be a problem, and the only things I ever found closed were some seasonal tourist trap places.

Have a great trip !

Thanks again for all the great tips and experiential input.

We still plan to hold off on the final destination (Black Hills or Colorado) based on the 10 day weather forecast for the Black Hills about 2-3 days before departure. We're hoping Ma Nature will cooperate and I can show my wife the magic of the Black Hills that I got to experience in 2010.

Otherwise it's the cage n' bike trailer to Colorado with perhaps some dirt biking thrown in for good measure.

Really... can't lose either way!

If your wife hasn't been there she may be like mine and fall in love with the place and want to move there. Last year we stayed at the mile high motel in custer inexpensive. I have set out 3 times to do the black hills and then go down to Colorado but each time I have too much fun in SD so I never made it to Colorado, So this year I decided to leave the Black Hills out and go directly to Colorado on Friday.

Whatever you decide Have a safe trip.

Horse Thief Campgrounds just south of Mt Rushmore on 87 to Needles Hwy. Weather great some road. Construction the park rangers neglect to mention when they take your free other than that it's great here.

I did that trip last year starting the day after labor day. Left Western Washington, hit Little Big Horn Battlefield, Devils Tower and Sturgis on the way. Stayed in Rapid City while touring the Black Hills (Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Deadwood, etc). The weather was perfect, there weren't any big crowds and lodging was inexpensive. The only rain I saw was going over the Tetons to Yellowstone on the way back. I would highly recommend the trip. Be careful if you have to ride at night, lots of antelope and deer on the roads. And KEEP YOUR DISTANCE FROM BUFFALO, they are mean buggers.
