Default White Mountains trip

Heading to NH from Pittsburgh area next week on my Sportster. Was going to go this week, but trip got postponed due to Isaac weather moving through. The plan is to ride up through upstate NY to Lake Champlain and over into VT and then into New Hampshire.

Plan to home base in Conway and wondering if there are any "must see" things? I have Mt Washington ride planned and Flume Gorge on the list. Any other suggestions. I have three days of ride time in the state.

Thanks!

Sportster,

All good rides. Try to do the Kanc. It will end right in Conway. You could use that to get there. Mount Washington is good although very weather permiting.
Evens Notch is a good take, thats Rt 113, along with Crawford, Pinckham and Franconia Notches.
A lot like to do while in Conway is Hurricane Mtn. Its fun but a bit rough due to frost heaves.
Dixville Notch is very nice to, Rt 16 North out of North Conway, through Pinckham Notch all the way up to Errol. The West on Dixville Notch into Colebrook and then head back South. A nice ride.

Good luck.

I'm from Pittsburgh also. We went to Laconia last spring. Rode all week up there and couldn't find a bad place to ride. You'll love it. Mt Washington is a must weather permitting. We stayed west of Laconia near Andover and all the roads are great.

I was born and raised in Lancaster NH right in the heart of the White Mountains, what are you looking for and maybe I can help?
Twisty roads, following rivers, through mountain passes? Most of the roads up have all of those things, just stay off the interstate and go explore. Being down south for over 21 yrs I forget how pretty it is up there and how most of the roads I use to ride every day now look so amazing now when I go home on vacations. The weather is cooling off pretty good at night and NH has no helmet law if that matters. Do you plan on camping or staying in hotels?

Just came back from Mt. Washington. If u go inside, cross over the lobby area to the back left and downstairs. They have Half Moons that are HUGE and out of thsi world DELICIOUS! With a cup of coffee, sitting on the mile long porch in the rocker looking out is a sight to remember!!!

Also if u r not far from the Kangamangus Hwy, there is a place or 2 on it whre u can pull off, jump into ur bathing suit and slide (be careful) in wicked cold water along the well worn out rocks. Also pretty memorable.

I left NH and rode thru (crap forgot the town) but into VT, the Mtns are acutally nicer there and the towns GORGEOUS! Esp the small towns.

You are really going to enjoy it there.

Be carefuly going up Mt. Washington. U may need to put warmer gear on when u go up. There is a WX station up there and u may be in the clouds literally.

They close Mt Washington 1 day a year for BIKES only. Right around Laconia Rally I thnk.

Ride the Kangamangus highway out of I think lincoln/conway
We stay in campton and then head up there.
All the summer ski resorts have cool stuff, mt coasters, shows, I forget but wildcat mt and loon mt had a lot of fun stuff to do an see.

The riding around the presidential range is really nice, the mts are impressive for the northeast.
During the bike week rally you can ride your bikes only to the summit of Mt washington, I think you can still do it its just you will share the road with cars.

It is worth the ride though, very cool place to go.
There is a couple parks in Franconia notch, and mt cable car thing and a cool gorge you can walk through, a lot of good stuff up there in the northern part of the state

The lakes region has a few good rides too but the northern parts are much more biker friendly and the little towns up there are really quaint New England towns.
We go every year and ride all over, beautiful riding, the KAngamangus is newly paved right now 8)

PS you will learn the New HAmpshire wave, swatin the black flies away from you, OMG they are nasty in the mts, I mean seriously we parked in a parking lot off the Kang and watched riders pull in, and counted how long until they were in full swat mode against the bugs and then had to leave, lol it is funny, we were in a car on that ride.

Watch out for Moose!!

FYI
Mt Washington has recorded the fastest wind speeds on earth every recorded and has weather that can change in seconds from mild to severe and really mess up your day, so be careful., 6800 ft isnt that big for a MT but this is a dangerous Mt with a history of incidents almost all climber and weather related, we took the van tour one year and got the whole history, really interesting.
