When you get to NYC it is worth the trip to go to Indian Larry's in Brooklyn, it is only a 20 minute ride from downtown NYC. Also, on your way back, you can stop at Peter Lugers Steak house, ranked in the top 5 steak houses year after year.

Definitly want to come into NYC via NJ. That way it is easy to stop and see the Statue of Liberty.

If you decide to travel through northern Louisiana stay off of I 20 from Texas line to Monroe! US 84 is a nice route but if you are looking for scenic/rustic, try La Hiway 2! Really nice most of the way! You wan't break is speed records but all in all a nice ride! I 20 is just rough as **ll! I hate it! Good luck! Y'all have fun!
