OK, I think I have a trip outline. Ventura, Prescott, Jerome, Rt191, Petrified Forest/Painted Desert, Canyon De Chelly, Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon, Laughlin. Will spend 10 or 11 days getting to Laughlin and will stop and camp where something looks good or we get tired of riding for the day.
Nothing really to see at Canyon De Chelly unless you get off the bike and hike a little.
I agree, but I would run 191 south to north, much better ride uphill
That's how I have always done it. Usually because you leave the desert heat behind early in the day, rather than ride into it in the afternoon. Going south, it can be pretty damn hot past Morenci, especially from May-September.
That's how we did it this past May and it was an awesome ride. It also set us up for our ride back to Chandler through Show Low and Globe (Route 60W) which is another great road.
If you plan on visiting the Grand Canyon, take the extra time to see the North Rim. The views are spectacular and much better than the South Rim. It's an extra 180 miles from the South Rim and you have to take the road up to the Kaibab Plateau (a series of switchbacks that take you from 4000 feet elevation to 7921 feet at Jacob Lake) there is no lake. It consists of a log cabin lodge and a Chevron station. From there it is 54 miles to the North Rim Lodge. From the Lodge, make your way to Angel's Window, a truly spectacular sight. If you're up for dinner at this point, ride over to Kanab, Utah for dinner at Houston's Trail's End for the best chicken fried steak you'll ever have anywhere. Or there is the Kaibab Lodge set back off the road between Jacob Lake and the North Rim Lodge, another excellent choice for dinner.
Petrified Forest is pretty boring! Once you've seen one piece of wood that is now a rock, you've seen them all! I rode the Coronado Trail 5 weeks ago and it was awesome!
Go to Show Low take highway 60 east out of Show Low to 180 south through western part of New Mexico then pick up 78 West tell it goes into 191 take 191 north.
191 is the old Devils Highway it use to be Highway 666 but they changed the numbers.
Also known as the Coronado Trail number 20 on the top 100 motorcycle roads web site.
If you are going to the Grand Canyon you might want to take a look at Monument Valley which isn't all that far away and near Mexican Hat, which isn't a bad lay over if you book in advance. You could also head north from there and visit Moab which is nice.
Ok, really getting ready for the trip now. Just bought a Bushtec Roadstar trailer. No more eating cold sandwiches and drinking warm beer when camping on the bike.

That's the only way to go.... notice the trailer plate. You'll find out soon enough.
