I have been to the Beartooth and Yellowstone over the 4th of July. The whole area is so beautiful I can't remember what the traffic was like. I agree with Cody over West Yellostone. Lot of great rides out of Cody.
In addition, I would consider Cody Wy instead of West Yellowstone. Much cooler town (imo) and it has a Harley Dealer right there. I know it has a big rodeo grounds and plenty of hotels. Imo, it has more of the small town America feel you refer to than West Yellowstone. And I get the 4th of july thing, but it will be insane anywhere near Yellowstone.
To me West Yellowstone is a little too T-shirt/salt water taffy. It's not bad, but not that great either. Again, just my opinion.
I agree with Cody over West Yellowstone. West Yellowstone, right on the entrance to the park is trying to get their share of tourist dollars like Nevada says.
Jackson, WY is a pretty cool place. Neat bars and restaurants. I was there on a July 4th and they have a good fireworks show with the mountains for a nice backdrop. The traffic did suck, though.
That is about 130 miles and on a beautiful day it can easily take 3-4 hours if you go through Idaho City.
I've been on roads with alot of switchbacks but that streach for me takes the cake. Actually I could'nt wait to get down to the valley & hit some straight streach of road. Very pretty ride though.
I hear ya, and if they are doing any work on the road, which they often are in the summer, you might as well find a good spot to enjoy the view.
Speaking of views....this coming summer I'll be going out Glacier N.P. then down to Yellowstone & beartooth hwy. I just can't get enough of riding out west...your lucky to live in such beautiful land. Have a happy new year.
