Default 2013 Summer Vacation Road Trip

We are planning on organizing a road trip this summer and would like to get some feedback about the idea.
Thinking about a 1 week trip through the mountains of Idaho and western Montana, (both helmet free states) with the main attraction being the 4th of July in West Yellowstone. Small town USA...Americana, they have a rodeo and a rather spectacular fireworks show when you consider the size of the town.
The total trip is 1200 miles broken up into 200 miles/day roughly.

The poll questions are to get an idea of what would be expected for a trip like this.

This is not a money making proposition, it is just an adventure that could be an incredible trip through some of the most beautiful country in the world.

Idaho and Western Montana are both great places to ride. There is no way I would consider trailering in that area. The riding is just too good.

I would not be too crazy about 4th of July weekend. There is enough traffic in Yellowstone without being there on a holiday. Plus rooms are going to be a lot tuffer to get during a holiday.

If I go I ride .. Wife don't want to ride that far she can fly and meet me .. Motels for me, done enough camping and at my age No Thanks .. Many Campgrounds are close in price to what a Motel costs anymore unless primitive camp .. I avoid Holidays for long trips if possible ..

A buddy and I camped at a primitive campground between Beartooth Pass and Cooke City. The next morning we were having breakfast in Cooke City, and were told that a grizzly frequented that campground. Yikes! Hotels from now on.

I always ride on my trips, never even considered trailering or fly & ride. With that said, I'm blessed to have an employer that lets me take off for a month if I want to. I love to camp but find it more convenient not having to pack all my camping gear.
This coming summer (leaving July 10th.) I'll be heading out to Glacier N.P. for 4-5 days then meander my way down to Yellowstone,Beartooth hwy. then back toward S. Dakota before heading home. I'll take 3.5 weeks for the trip maybe less. The reason I'm leaving July 10th. is to avoid the 4th. of July crowds.

What he said.

In addition, I would consider Cody Wy instead of West Yellowstone. Much cooler town (imo) and it has a Harley Dealer right there. I know it has a big rodeo grounds and plenty of hotels. Imo, it has more of the small town America feel you refer to than West Yellowstone. And I get the 4th of july thing, but it will be insane anywhere near Yellowstone.

To me West Yellowstone is a little too T-shirt/salt water taffy. It's not bad, but not that great either. Again, just my opinion.

If you camp make sure you have the right gear. At the higher elevations the nights can get very cold yet.

I try to do most of my higher elevations trips in August. Even in August you still have to watch your weather close.

Watch the weather closely in Yellowstone. Sucks mostly. It travels up the Snake River Valley and sits over the park.
