Default Washington state plans

Hey all - Looking for some suggestions on our upcoming plans for the month of May.

We have been thinking about shipping our bike to Seattle and then tour the state and then ride the coast home.

Another idea is to spend the week in the state and take in as many sites as possible. I checked out the Fly and ride and to rent a bike for a week is close to the cost of shipping, then we just fly home.

If we rent, then we would need to bring our gear and would we need our leathers or just our rain gear.

We like both ideas so any feedback would be great.

Thank you.

I would lean toward renting. The weather during that time of year can be rainy and cool, especially if you get out of the Seattle area toward the mountains. If the weather is nice rent a bike but if it's crappy then rent a car. Or better yet wait til mid to late June or July and ride up and back.

If you're west of the Cascades, you may need rain gear...never a bad idea to have it tucked into yer bags, anyway. One of the great rides in this state is through the Rain Forest...spectacular, but you'll probly get wet 'cause it's not called the Rain Forest for nothin'...another good one is over the North Cascades from Sedro Wooley to Winthrop. Beautiful scenery as are all of the mountain passes. In May, though, it may not be very warm and the chance of rain is higher than in the summer months. The East side of the state is warmer and dryer... less traffic, too.

Never rented a scoot. Sounds like a good idea but you'd miss that drive down the Oregon/Cal Coast. Enjoy yer trip, m'friend, and honk if ya go thru Wenatchee.

I would just plan the trip- check the 5 day forecast before finalizing it.

You can do the Pike Place market, Space Needle, EMP, Ye Old Curiosity Shoppe, Ft Worden, Snoqualmie Falls, Roslyn, and The Crab Pot.

Where you go depends on your tastes and interests....

Rain or shine it would be fun to ride around and then head to the coast and ride south through Astoria, Seaside, Lincoln City, Newport, Coos Bay, Florence, and into Crescent City, Calif.

Two years ago we spent almost the whole month of August there on the coast with it only raining one night and that's when we were in Forks. That was a perfect month with temps in the mid 70's. Locals told us it rains "a little a lot" for the rest of the 11 months!

+1 on Sling Blades' comment - Where you go depends on your tastes and interests....

Spent many years in WA State. Some additional ideas (just Google them):
- The Cascade Loop (I love Leavenworth)
- Not sure you can time it correctly, but Eastern Washington during growing season (hops, apples, grapes, etc) is beautiful. Fun to visit the wineries too.
- I always liked taking the ferries over to places like Whidbey Island, Bainbridge Island, and touring some of the small towns with bed & breakfasts and local restaurants.
- White Pass
- Columbia River Gorge (between WA and OR)

If in Wa I think the best thing is to pick up the book called Destation Highways Wa.
Its a full of detail book with the best 347 rides here in this wonderful state. Hope this may help most hd dealerships sell it

Thank you all for the advice. I know riding the coast would be great but I have been looking at a few sites about Washington and it is beautiful. We also want to venture into Canada.

Thanks again and ride safe.

Coast will probably be wet. Bring raingear and warm or heated clothes. If you can make the change July or Aug is much better.
If you're in the area check out a little place called Dry Falls Park. Doesn't look like much until you hear the story. There is a small theater at the park showing what happened thousands of years ago. The ride south from there gives you an idea what nature did.
Big TC skipped a couple of letters. The book is Destination Highways Washington. Excellent advice
