We did it last August.
Skyline from Front Royal to the end, then BRP the next day.
As stated above BRP was extremely foggy first thing in the morning but by 9:00 it burned off and the sun was out. Great ride!
Virginia and West Virgina have great roads for riding.
Loved the twisties in West Virginia.....Beautiful country.
Hope to get back there again this summer.
Harley Guy, If you mean Front Royal you might be thinking of Jalisco on 340 just before a uphill left hand bend. They are known for tasty food, large portions and well, roaches running across the tables. My wife won't go there anymore.
Closer to Skyline is Soul Mountain at 300 E. Main with free public parking half a block away. It's a mix of Caribbean & Cajun. A very interesting menu.
I leave Concord, NH and head south every couple of years in late April. Thr BRP is a must. That time of year you will hit the moutain laurel and magnolia....Nice.
A couple of us did the ride a 2 years ago and had a great time. While it's true that the speeds are 35/45 mph it's still a nice ride. If you're in a hurry then maybe you should pick a different route. Take the time to stop and look around.
As others have said, be careful of Bambi and family. They have no fear of cars and bikes. We had 3 of them come right up to the picnic table we where sitting at.
The wife and I have riden both the BRP and Skyline from north to south and south to north. The views are entirely different from each other and totally enjoyable. What you miss going one direction, you can enjoy going the other. On the Skyline, you might get a little complacent but you need only get off and do a little exploring on your own. Remember to consult with the locals as they always know the best places for eatss and scenery and the easiest way to get to them. There is just sooo much to see along the Parkway. For the most part you have to get off and explore. BuzzardII, when we were there last year, we traveled from south to north. We stopped at the Music Center. While there we enjoyed a couple of older fellows playing mountain music and I could have listened to them all day. When we departed, I asked a lady working at the center about a place to eat. She directed us back out to the Parkway, North a very short way, and off to the left. We crossed the parallelling roadway to this little general store/restraunt and had the best experience of the trip. Could you help, I would certainly like to know the name of the business. They had checkerboard table clothes and picnic tables inside. Just really GREAT people. They kept talking about some sort of fried bread desert that the owner made. Help??? To the OP, remember, you are only one wrong turn away from your next greatest adventure. It truly is a great ride.

Oh I agree. actually been up and down BRP a couple of times and enjoyed the heck out it. I was more concerned with Skyline and how the roads are there. Wouldn't want to get all the way up there to find they're gravel or dirt.. That would suck..
Skyline is pavement all the way. Speed is reduced to 35 or less and heavily patrolled. Probably one of the lesser known but better roads IMHO is US Rt. 250 out of Waynesboro, VA into Elkins, WV.

Hey Nutz, I rode the Skyline Drive from Front Royal Va. down to the BRP, to Smoky Mt. N.P. The Skyline is just a northern extension of the BRP. If you liked the BPR you will like the Skyline! The speed limit is 35 mph and the turns are a little tighter! We took our time and rode some of the scenic roads that crossed the Drive into W Vir. very nice! You will enjoy it! A lot of small white tailed deer along the way, I counted 22 one day, right along the Drive. Enjoy.
Going from north to south, how long does it take to ride skyline and BRP. Also are there signs at the exits for food and gas, or is that a guessing game.
