Planning first X-country trip ?s about Nevada,Utah
I am in the process of planning a trip by myself, taking my Heritage from central KY to Mammoth Lakes CA. A couple of questions. I'm thinking I would enter Nevada at Ely. I'm trying to avoid interstate.
Would you guys recommend US 50 in Nevada over US 6? I hear its over 160 miles between gas on US 6, I think I would save some time on US 6.
Would September or June be a better time to take on the desert?
Depends what you are looking for. I would take the 50 to Lake Tahoe and stop in Virginia City and take a detour into Yosemite using Tioga Pass Road off the 395. Tahoe and Yosemite are beautiful and worth seeing.
Id go in September.
The Great Basin Desert, which covers a lot of Nevada and Utah isn't as hot as the Mojave or Sonoran Deserts. It will be dry, but it's much higher in elevation and therefore cooler. I would be more concerned about snow in the Rockies and Sierras, which could occur in both June and September. Not a high probability, but definitely a possibility.
I did both of those last year Memorial Day weekend. It's actually 176 miles from Ely to Tonapah for gas. I liked 50 better and would suggest it over 6. Very nice ride but there is a whole lot of nothing along route. Are you camping along the way? I just pulled off the road into the desert and pitched a tent.

I'm afraid I'm a hotel/motel, need a shower, steak at the restaurant, have an after-dinner drink at the bar kind of rider. I gotta really be in the mood to camp, and riding solo doesn't lend itself to camping in the desert.

Damn ,,, you guys are making me feel bad, I live on Route 6 between Ely NV and Tonopah NV. Either June or September is nice out here .. afternoons will always be windy in June. I ride Route 6 a bit but both leave a lot to be desired. In the summers I usually have my bike at my place in Northern NV (Lamoille NV). You can make better time on Route 6 because there are less reasons to stop. US50 is a fine road and like a lot of these folks have said there is a bit to do along the way. One bit of advice ... don't pass up a chance to buy gas. Delta Ut to Ely NV is 152 miles and Ely to Tonopah NV is 168 between gas stations.
I traveled 50 thru NV a couple years ago in mid-June and although the heat wasn't too bad (nothing like southern NV desert) it was WINDY especially in the afternoons. SJ Ron
