A friend and I are planning a weekend ride. Since he lives in IL and I live in MD, we are planning to meet in Huntington, WV. From there we have 2 days to tour the area, returning to Huntington on the 2nd night.

From Huntington we have a route planned out. We aren't locked into anything, but like the route so far.

http://www.mapquest.com/?version=1.0&hk=1-RVE9sH89

This loop sends us very near or through:

- the Daniel Boone National Forest
- Pine Mountain State Park (Chained Rock)
- Cumberland Gap National Historic Park
- Cumberland Gap tunnel
- Big Stone Gap, VA
- Breaks Interstate Park (Grand Canyon of the South)
- the Hatfield and McCoy area of WV / KY

Are there any locals that can point us to the "cant miss" watering holes, restaurants, roads, or sites/scenery? We are planning to stay in motels every night (the night on the road, and 2 nights in Huntington), so recommendations for that are also welcome.

Default Back Roads

There are plenty of REALLY good roads in the areas you have marked out for your trip. The real trouble is not enough time to ride them. I live in the area and one of my favorite rides is in the Hwy 33,66,58, and 70 area. You guys will be on Hwy 58 for a while but it is a 4 lane road with beautiful scenery but no real challenge to ride. Can't help you with eating and a place to stay as it's too close to home.

Rt 16 in Southern WV is a road we found last year. Rt 219 used to hold my heart. Every trip between Vermont and Myrtle Beach somehow encompasses these roads. Headed down next week to ride the bikes home. Well be looking for better roads if there is such a thing. Can't see how it can get better. Welch is an interesting city or should I say ghost city.

Cool. I will take a look at those other roads you mentioned and see if one or two of them can possibly be worked in.

Anyone else with some good spots to get a bite or a drink?

When in Huntington strongly recommend favorite restaurant Fat Patty's (recommend the pretzel burger). Its in 3rd And 20th street by the stadium. Plenty of watering holes around.

And you do know that you're pretty close to Maggie Valley too?

(Too many roads and no where near enough time.)

Default Eats

There is a little Amish country store near Rose Hill, Va. It is called Dutch Treat and is right by a little place that sells storage building etc. All their there breads for sandwiches are home made and they have great sweet rolls and such. It's really between Rose Hill and Jonesville Va. It's really easy to go past it and not see the little store. It's closed Sunday and Monday but open the rest of the week.

While your in the area, you might stop by the Natural Tunnel state park(Duffield Va.). It's not far out of your way, but well worth the time to see. Reno's in Wise Va. is a great place to eat(biker friendly). Best Western right next door.
