I live in Iowa between hiway 30 and I-80 . Stay off hiway 30 , in the spring there are lots of farm tractors and tillage eaquipment using it. And they drag big chunks of mud onto the hiway and tie up traffic. Also in eastern iowa hi-way 30 is very rough. This time of year I would stay off all smaller hi-ways in farming regions if you are trying to make time. If not slow down , kick back and enjoy.
If you stay on 1-80 west past Chicago right into Iowa. At Iowa City about 40 miles from the border head north on 280 and from there you have the option of taking hiway 20 across the state or going north to Minn. and taking I 90. I recommend hiway 20 , not busy , fairly smooth and 4 lane most of the way.
I've lived and worked in the Chicago metro area for 40 years my advice:
Shortest route with less traffic, I-80 west, I-355 north, I-290 west, I-90 west. This creates a loop further west than I-294 and has less traffic. I-355 south end has tolls which are a PITA without a pass
Rush hour is longer than I read earlier 6am-10am and 3pm-7pm, both directions equally backed up, moderate traffic (high speed bumper to bumper ) an hour on each end
I-80 at the Ill/Indiana border has some of the worst backups during rush hour
If traffic is the main consideration then stay on I-80 halfway across IL to I-39 north and pick up I-90 in Rockford, I-39 average speed determined by WOT and LEO. This adds miles, reduces tolls
I drove the the Iowa I-80 twice weekly last summer and had no trouble, easy to make good time, I think the go thru Iowa is a good suggestion
US 30 is now a local only road, too much congestion.
I'm sorry for not responding sooner. Thank you all for your input and responses. We ended up taking Rt 80 straight to Davenport IA. From Davenport, we took 61 N to 20 W To 29N to 50W to 47W back to 50W, then 18W into Bonesteel SD(where I am about to go to sleep!). I am truly having the time of my life and can't wait to hop on my ultra first thing tomorrow. Tomorrow, we head to the Badlands, then MT Rushmore. I'm sorry, I will not be able to do pics until my return. Thank you all again!
