? What do you need? Are you looking for special scenic routes or just basic map directions?

A quick route across to tr 74 rather than going all the way around
what I would call a beltway.

Easiest route, coming from I-70 on the east side:

* I-70 W to West side of town (Airport for reference)
* I-465 N
* Speedway
* I-74 W

I-70 straight across to the WEST side of town (By Indy International Airport, can't miss it!), look for I-465 North (You'll cross under the I-465 overpass on the East side. I-465 is what we call the "Spaghetti bowl", one big loop around greater Indy. Getting on their on the east side will take you all the way around the north side and back down the west side. Closer to stay with I-70 across and completely skip the alternative complicated route which means cutting downtown in half with some switchbacks and the like if you're not already familiar with it.). Go about 15 miles North and you'll see the exit for Speedway. That overpass is I-74) Taking the eastbound off ramp will put you in the heart of Speedway at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and back into downtown. Taking the westbound off ramp will put you on I-74, headed toward Crawfordsville, In.

My previous post is still best. What I would call the beltway, across town to reach I-74 is still out of the way some.

I-65 North you can jump coming in from I-70 east, take that up through the heart of downtown (But I-65 cuts across town from SE to NW and you would still have to get onto I-465, this time southbound and again on the west side, to get back south to I-74.) working your way back.

Ther first option in my original reply is still simplest, cleanest, and fastest way.

I rode through Indy last week, going from I-70 to I-74. We took I-465 south around Indy. It wasn't bad except for the mile or so before I-65 S breaks off. Right at that exit the amount of idiots flying around and weaving in and out to get 1-2 cars ahead coming up to the exit was just stupid.

I'm sure time of day makes a difference as to the level of congestion. For most towns of that size, the bypass is there for a reason. Shortcuts through the heart of town often end up eating up more in time than they save in mileage.

The beltway is pretty much impossible to avoid for easy direct route through Indy.

Simply slogging the interstate into Indianapolis is the easiest to follow. I70 to I74. Not the fastest, but the easiest to follow without getting lost.

Faster but more complex is to come in from the east and either split north or south (don't think it really matters), and then try to trim the edges of the bell via local roads.

North version would be something like I-70, I-65, W38th, I-495, I-74.

South version would be something like I-70, Holt Rd, Rockville Rd, I-74.

Sometimes, there's just no "good" route. You just slog along.

Especially when it comes to Indy. I dread it far more than a run past Chicago even, which should tell you something. Reacher had it right about the drivers. Be on high alert.
