I came through downtown Indy on I-70 9 days ago. Road construction everywhere - traffic was a disaster. 465 is just your typical beltway loop.

I-70 straight across to the WEST side of town (By Indy International Airport, can't miss it!), look for I-465 North (You'll cross under the I-465 overpass on the East side. I-465 is what we call the "Spaghetti bowl", one big loop around greater Indy. Getting on their on the east side will take you all the way around the north side and back down the west side. Closer to stay with I-70 across and completely skip the alternative complicated route which means cutting downtown in half with some switchbacks and the like if you're not already familiar with it.). Go about 15 miles North and you'll see the exit for Speedway. That overpass is I-74) Taking the eastbound off ramp will put you in the heart of Speedway at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and back into downtown. Taking the westbound off ramp will put you on I-74, headed toward Crawfordsville, In.
Huh?? I've lived in the Indy area for 25 years and got lost reading this.....

Be careful coming in from the east on I-70 after the Greenfield Exit 104, especially around Mt Comfort Road Exit 96 (flat stretch of road but always accidents), then choose I-465 South also marked I-74 and take it around the south side, curving north to become I-465 North (DO NOT follow Airport signs, you will go west out of your way), I-74 West is about less than 10 miles north and well marked (don't choose Speedway, it is east of I-465). The entire interchanged was revamped a few years ago and traffic flows smoothly. Check out the Eagle Creek Dam on the north side of the road.

Some locals refer to I-465 as a clock dial (a famous car commercial), so you will be coming in at 3 o'clock and leaving at 10 o'clock.....

Yup, this is the route I took last week, spelled out in more detail.

I've been around Indy several times and tried different routes. It's the best way I've found.
