Well so much for this trip. I'd planned on doing Hwy 12 from Lewiston to Missoula last Thursday. We rode south on Hwy95 in 100 plus heat and when we arrived in Lewiston ...SUPRISE...the sign said Hwy 12 closed due to fire at Lolo pass. About that time I really really needed a beer...or six.
So we decided to carry on to Orofino and find out hotel, the Konkolville Motel. Now that was a nice surprise. Clean rooms, biker friendly, motorcycle parking, clean terrycloth rags to wash your bike with, $55 per nite which includes a real breakfast, and for $14 each you get a really nice steak and a barbie to grill it on, along with a good sized already baked spud and a salad plus fixin's. Did I mention the pool??? In addition there were a dozen or so other riders to shoot the crap with.
I'll be doing Hwy 12 next year , without the fire if you please. I already know where I'll be staying.
Sounds like you made the best of it. US 12 was just reopened early Saturday but it's still been smokey and pretty hot...but hold the phone. In the last hour we've had some big azz thunderstorm activity....the good kind with rain. Looking at the radar that fire area looks like it got some rainfall. Anyway, just might clear the smoke out and get things back to normal for those folks looking to ride this way.
we came thru hwy 12 from Lolo july 24th what a great road....was 106 when we got to Orifino and yeap had same thing going needed Beer and cold pool!!!!SCORE.....hahhaa
We checked in and I ran right to the pool then liquor store....lol great place
Good to know - I have (vague) plans to head that way starting Saturday. I realize things can change quickly so I might still chance it and go that direction. A good room, a decent breakfast and a steak sounds like a good plan B
