If you're in the Ontonogan / Greenland area, stop by the Adventure Mine for a tour. Went out of production around 1920. I stopped last summer just out of curiosity. Well worth it.
Hwy 2 out of St. Ignace westward along the lake is gorgeous. You can take it all the way to Escanaba, then hook up with 35 south to Marinette. Also - the "Big Mack" bridge (Mackinac Bridge - from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace) is a kick. You can see right through the steel grates all the way to the lake below as you're riding over it.
Yea I agree, that's some beautiful country, took the long way around to the 110th anniversary this year to milwaukee through there, stayed in mackinaw city, and then rode hwy 2 around to escanaba and through the top wisconsin. Great ride!

On your way to the U.P., you might want to get to the west side of the state and get on U.S. 31 and head north, going through Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon, Ludington and Manistee. Just north of Manistee is route M-22. Follow that north into the Leelanau peninsula, around to Traverse City, picking up U.S. 31 again heading north to Petosky. North of Petosky, take M-119 to the left and follow this through Harbor Springs and then the Tunnel of Trees to Cross Village and the famous Legs Inn which overlooks Lake Michigan - great place to eat and have a beer. Then go east on W. Levering Rd. (county road 66) to U.S 31 again and head north to Mackinaw City. Next follow I-75 over the Mackinac Bridge into the U.P.
You can easily follow this suggested route on Google Maps. Have a great trip to the U.P.
We did the west shore from Mackinaw to Muskegon last spring. The shore communities are great to roll through on a sunny day.
A friend went back for Bike Time. He was impressed. He called it a must do for any HD rider in the mitten state.
