there are a lot less tourists after labor day. any time from then up till the aspens change colors is very nice. might catch some cold mornings, but there is lots of sunshine and blue sky most days.
Late May through July will be good. Might still get some rain in the mountains. July will be pretty hot in the lowlands, but nice in the mountains. Sept. there will be a real possibility of rain, and in Oct the mountains start getting cold.
I always liked late May into June. But depending on how bad the winter was you may not be able to get from here to there for a few more weeks. But that could also happen in August too. Ya never know.
Late May to mid July is always nice. After Labor Day is as well but the threat of snow in the higher elevations is greater. We did get snow in the mountains around the Fourth of July and again in mid August. (Climate change my ***.) The mountains seem to get rain every day during the mid summer, usually just a quick shower that moves on. But it isn't like the whole of the mountains get it. Be prepared for freezing temps even in the middle of summer at higher elevations, specially if you're camping. Layers will be the rule. You may want to limit the length of time you're here as you won't want to leave.
Without a doubt, Sept. post-Labor Day. Far less tourists, the monsoon t-storms are not as bad, and the leafs are changing with maybe a touch of snow up high. SJ Ron
I live in Colorado and there's not better time to ride than in mid-September. Listen, riding in the high country you can get snow and monsoon rain just about any month of the year - June, July and August - seen it all covered in white. I find the weather is generally much calmer in September - that time of year is somewhere midway between monsoons and sleet/snow. My wife and I were camping mid-October at 10,000' and the weather was great. After Labor Day the great majority of tourists are gone; traffic is down, kids are in school and those who are afraid of our weather are staying close to home. Lots of bike riders are catching on about the great riding weather; you'll see a lot of local riders on the roads that time of year. Best riding weather - mid-September!
