If you go east, you'll be on the coast. If you go north, you'll be in the woods/mountains. You really can't go wrong with either. Route 1 runs along the coast and would be a great bike ride through the little towns. In May the traffic won't be bad.

The traffic won't be bad that time of year, but it will be cool in terms of weather, so pack your gear accordingly.

You have a ton of stuff right around Portland to keep you busy for a couple days. The Old Port, Portland Head Light, Sebago Lakes Region, LL Bean, and like stated you can head to the mountains or coastal.

Great thread as I am planning a trip from Tampa to Sydney, Nova Scotia and back via Niagara falls and the smokies next year. Looking for any good roads from Washington onwards

If you are going as far as Nova Scotia add Cape Breton to your trip, the Cabot trail is an incredible area, then a short hop on the ferry and you can be on Prince Edward Island from there across the federation bridge into New Brunswick. Some great riding up that way.
