Default Portland,Maine????

Son moved to Portland which means I get to go on a bike trip this coming May. Never been there. Looking for recommendations on rides and must see stops for day trips within a 100 miles or so from the city.

Do an image search or just a plain Google search on..... Acadia National Park and Cadillac mountain....It's in Bar Harbor, Maine.....I'm not sure if its with in 100 miles or not but it is a beautiful ride.. Maybe the best Maine has to offer.......
I don't know where you will be crossing over into VT and or NH (north or south) but they are both way superior to Maine imo and have some awesome roads and stops along the way....So take your time getting there and back ....

Check out the Kancamagus Hwy (Route 112) through the White Mountain National Forest.

We took a trip to the finger lakes this year and i think the riding in NH and ME is very much like upstate NY.You just cant find a bad place to ride.During the spring and fall except foliage there is no crowd. The ocean is a great ride but can be cool in the spring.Portland is a great central location.I cant wait to make another trip to NY this year.

May is black fly season in Maine and they aren't nice. As suggested in another post, June and Bike Week might be a better time.

Portland is a nice town to visit. They have a very good art museum if that's your thing. The waterfront district is full of quaint shops, tourist trap shops, art stores and some really neat bars.

Within that 100 mile range is Pemaquid Point lighthouse, very photogenic. With a little museum that has a mounted lobster on the wall. Not just any lobster mind you, this baby scales out to, as I recall, 42 pounds! They do admit however, that it was caught in MA.

Stopping in Freeport means LL Bean. Open 24/7/365 if they don't have it, you don't need it.

Boothbay Harbor, just west of Pemequid is a very scenic little town with some of the best restaurants around.

If sticking to shopping and walking in the towns you will be OK. If you get within 100 feet of a stand of trees you may bleed out before reaching your bike to escape. Forget bug spray, that's like salt and pepper to the files. You need a head net during the hatch.

Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park is 170 to 185 miles away, depending on the route. It's worth the ride, but of course, I am a bit biased....

The Kancamagus Highway in the white mountains is incredible, and a ride up Mount Washington is awesome, especially on a clear day.

You could also ride around Sebago Lake, or ride up Rt 1 as far as you cared to and turn around. Plenty of turn outs to explore.

For the record, no black flies in Bar Harbor, we are too close to the water and too much of a breeze. In the park/forest/inland? Yep, and they can be brutal.....

I went there a few years ago with the lady and we had a great time. Mostly stayed in town with only 1 side trip. We found the best place to get lobster was a place on one of the wharfs where you ordered at a window and ate outside at stand up tables. We ate there every day I think because it was the cheapest place to get a whole lobster dinner, and it was delicious.

Old Port I think was the name of the area we stayed.

We drove up to Bangor one day on the interstate for reasons that are hard to explain. Not much going on in Bangor. We came back down the coastal road and it was really beautiful.

Have fun.
