Default 2015--Route 66 +,+

We are about 6-10 in a group,of AUSTRALIAN HOG's looking at doing a once (for some once +,+,+) memorable Harley tour through mainly Route 66 Territory ,South to North ,or reverse.) in the later half of 2015.Many questions,e.g;-can anyone suggest reputable outfits/Companies that can supply the essentials(bikes,,backup/support//,Accomm.etc,etc,).What is a ballpark figure (I know this is wide open, but ,we need a starting point),of what we can expect to pay ,details would be accepted and really appreciated.
Also,we are open to any/all suggestions.
Contact with any HOG Chapters will be appreciated and answered.
Thanks and regards from your Brothers from the "Land Down Under".

how long is your trip?
Route 66 is basically Major Interstate (HWY 40) from California to Chicago, except you turn north on 44 in OKlahoma City. You get off the highway at various tourist trap little towns...

Welcome to ya! If this is "one of see America trip" I would not recommend route 66 (unless ya enjoy riding across your outback). It was the easy route west and by-pasted all the good stuff. There are so many great roads and sites you will miss on 66 plus most of 66 doesn't really exist anymore. Google best ride/roads in America for a starting point. I'd be glad to help if I can.

There are segments of Old 66 that still have some of the iconic landmarks, but for the most part, they
are few and far between. 66 itself was never a single, planned road, it was an accumulation of pre-existing
segments linked together.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico which is generally acknowledged to be the city with the greatest number
of remaining Old 66 hotels, etc. and I can tell yah there ain't anywhere near as much left as you'd think.

That said, there are a large number of cool, historic spots still remaining, but there's a lot of space between.

I'd start by researching what stuff really appeals, map them and then start planning a route to include as many
as possible. There's LOTS to see and do in the US that can be combined with Old 66 highlights, but just trying
to follow Old 66 itself may not be your best choice.

I'd start researching at this website..

Yeah to old Route 66 in mostly gone, a few streches through towns but the cross country part is basically all interstates, although you can see some of the old road running parrallel to the interstate in many places, especially in the west.
There is really much better rides in the US than 66. I could spend a lifetime riding around anywhere in West from the Grand Canyon north into Montana, Idaho etc. lots and lots of great roads.

I have ridden Rt. 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, and in most places there just isn't that much to see for the miles you will travel. So unless you just have to do it to say that you did, there are a lot of better rides.

If you want to do some of it, I would suggest a little in NM (around Albuquerque), Seligman to Oatman in Az. and Needles to Barstow in Calif. Be advised that the last time I was over the Calif part, the road was not good at all. The Arizona section was well maintained and interesting.

I had a great time on the Arizona section last summer. I would like to do all of it in the next couple of years. I would recommend getting some books and deciding what you'd like to see in each state. Then, there are some great maps I used that tell you what exit to get off of to see the site you want to see. The "Here it is" series (one map for each state) is excellent.

If you google it there are many companies that rent the Harleys and offer tours on Rt. 66 - especially for people from overseas. It sounds like a great trip. Although, I would recommend taking side trips to the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley National Park (owned and run by the Navajo tribe - they have wonderful jeep tours).

66 is a pretty iconic ride, I didn't expect anyone to try and talk him out of it. I guess it's since our part of old 66 is so good.
I've ridden with a female HOG officer who I believe used to be the director from Canberra, who I know for a fact has been over here several times and I would think would be able to steer you in the right direction.
My suggestion would be to hit someone like that up. If you'd like to give me some information I'll send it to her on facebook to see if she can help you out.
Sorry, but I'm just not comfortable releasing her name w/o her knowledge.

I don't really know about a support team but here is my thoughts. Do a fly and ride out of Los Angeles, California. Rent a harley and head north on highway 1 to San Francisco area. Don't forget the Monterrey Peninsula. Spend a little time looking at San Francisco and head east through the Napa Valley area. On to Yosemite. From Yosemite, one can go north to Lake Tahoe and on to Reno. Or you can go south to Death Valley and maybe over to Las Vegas. But to be a nay sayer. Don't fly halfway around the world to ride route 66.

I'm a Brit who keeps their Harley in Tampa.
In 2012 we rode from Tampa to Chicago and then followed as much of the original Rte66 as possible with a few detours, i.e. US-89a to Sedona then up through the Petrfied forest and at Williams took the train to the Grand Canyon. When approaching LA after Barstow decided didnt want to ride that sprawling mess called LA so took a diversion on CA-2, 64 miles of mountain road then just a short hop across to Santa Monica Pier.

Now last year did the trip back, but this time took the real scenic route back to Tampa.

Briefly: Las Vegas, Valley of Fire, Zion, Bryce, lake Powell, Glen Canyon, Moik Dugway, Mexican Hat, Monument Valley, Four corners, Durango, Milion Dollar Hwy, pikes Peak, Valley of the gods, Bishops Castle, big Texan, Talimena Scenic Hwy, Memphis, Nashville, then into the Smokiey mountains and rode the Rattler, a Dragon, Cherokola Skyway, Moonshine 28, down to Savhanna and finish in Tampa, 5000 miles.
The above trip blew Rte 66 out the water for the wow factor but as a petrol head still glad I did Rte 66
