Route 66 is basically Major Interstate (HWY 40) from California to Chicago, except you turn north on 44 in OKlahoma City. You get off the highway at various tourist trap little towns...

are few and far between. 66 itself was never a single, planned road, it was an accumulation of pre-existing
segments linked together.
I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico which is generally acknowledged to be the city with the greatest number
of remaining Old 66 hotels, etc. and I can tell yah there ain't anywhere near as much left as you'd think.
That said, there are a large number of cool, historic spots still remaining, but there's a lot of space between.
I'd start by researching what stuff really appeals, map them and then start planning a route to include as many
as possible. There's LOTS to see and do in the US that can be combined with Old 66 highlights, but just trying
to follow Old 66 itself may not be your best choice.
I'd start researching at this website..

There is really much better rides in the US than 66. I could spend a lifetime riding around anywhere in West from the Grand Canyon north into Montana, Idaho etc. lots and lots of great roads.
If you want to do some of it, I would suggest a little in NM (around Albuquerque), Seligman to Oatman in Az. and Needles to Barstow in Calif. Be advised that the last time I was over the Calif part, the road was not good at all. The Arizona section was well maintained and interesting.

If you google it there are many companies that rent the Harleys and offer tours on Rt. 66 - especially for people from overseas. It sounds like a great trip. Although, I would recommend taking side trips to the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley National Park (owned and run by the Navajo tribe - they have wonderful jeep tours).

I've ridden with a female HOG officer who I believe used to be the director from Canberra, who I know for a fact has been over here several times and I would think would be able to steer you in the right direction.
My suggestion would be to hit someone like that up. If you'd like to give me some information I'll send it to her on facebook to see if she can help you out.
Sorry, but I'm just not comfortable releasing her name w/o her knowledge.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
In 2012 we rode from Tampa to Chicago and then followed as much of the original Rte66 as possible with a few detours, i.e. US-89a to Sedona then up through the Petrfied forest and at Williams took the train to the Grand Canyon. When approaching LA after Barstow decided didnt want to ride that sprawling mess called LA so took a diversion on CA-2, 64 miles of mountain road then just a short hop across to Santa Monica Pier.
Now last year did the trip back, but this time took the real scenic route back to Tampa.
Briefly: Las Vegas, Valley of Fire, Zion, Bryce, lake Powell, Glen Canyon, Moik Dugway, Mexican Hat, Monument Valley, Four corners, Durango, Milion Dollar Hwy, pikes Peak, Valley of the gods, Bishops Castle, big Texan, Talimena Scenic Hwy, Memphis, Nashville, then into the Smokiey mountains and rode the Rattler, a Dragon, Cherokola Skyway, Moonshine 28, down to Savhanna and finish in Tampa, 5000 miles.
The above trip blew Rte 66 out the water for the wow factor but as a petrol head still glad I did Rte 66
