I am going to Nashville late this summer, looking at a map it seems i will have to go quite few miles out of the city to get some good riding. Is that true?

The BEST riding is to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery............

I would suggest you ride as much of the Natchez Trace as you can. The north end is in the Nashville area. It's not spectacular, but a nice, slow paced ride. I have only ridden the upper 100 miles of it, but I did enjoy it.

i would have to agree, you'll have to go at least 20 to 30 miles to get some good riding unless counting bar hopping. every direction you leave Nashville has nice riding but i also prefer the east. but Natchez trace is nice.
