I also think that your schedule is a bit ambitious. I have never rode Highway 1 between LA & SF, but I think that would eat up some time to do it justice. And then you gotta see the giant redwoods. I have ridden I-40 from Memphis, Tenn. to California and there just ain't much to see. Lots of trucks and lots of wind. Crossing the great plains is boring and windy.

Also, IMO, there are parts of Route 66 west of Flagstaff that are worth a look.

Even when I was a kid 10+ saddle hours everyday for 14 days was stupid. Never got the whole iron butt thing?? 600+ mile days across the midwest (and nevada?) may make sense, but there is waay tooo much to see and do out west to just blow through it all.

I know I can make it solo from NJ to Nashville in a days ride. After that I am estimating a 5000 mile round trip as per Mapquest. 5000 miles divided by 400 mile days leaves me at 12.5 days at average speed of 55mph to include gas and food stops. We have 14 days to do the 5000 miles. I figure some days will be double the 400 mile slotted time because there's nothing we want to see on that particular section. Some days may be slightly under the 400 miles. Figuring in this info, am I still pushing it?

Totally pushing it....400 mile days are no joke.

I'm new to the site but your battling time. You ride your *** off and your physically shot, enjoy nothing...

Last year I rode from easton pa to Omaha new straight thru to get ahead of time..

Gave me time to enjoy all my destinations out west.... After riding 1250 miles I prob averaged 150 - 200 miles a day when I got to the Rockies..

I 80 sucks...

I'm certainly not looking to ride pump to pump and miss everything... Maybe this wasn't a well thought out plan for a 2 week venture

Seems like way too many miles in a day. As others have said you want to enjoy the trip and not blow past everything right? What if you see something that interests you? With your schedule you wouldn't be able to stop. It would be go go go the whole time.

Maybe another set of destinations for this trip. Work will only allow two weeks during summer months. I'll plan a coast to coast next year during non summer months when I can take 3 weeks

I have a similar trip planned and I say go for it! Just be flexible with your time/mileage. If you a couple long days and aren't feeling it then maybe change your destination a bit or ride less of Rt 1. I've changed my trip a couple of times already and probably will again.

I have a a 800+ and a 700+ day at the start of my trip and will make my first destination on day 3 (Sturgis). The 3rd day I will only me doing 300ish miles including Mt Rushmore.

I think it's all in your attitude and endurance. Some guys have and will tell you not to something based on the fact that they did not enjoy doing it but you are your own man and if you are anything like me you need to come to that conclusion in your own. I did a couple of 800+ days last year and was fine with it. It was my first solo motorcycle trip and I have never had a better time. I only had one hotel reservation during the short 5 day trip everything else was on my terms. I stopped when I wanted, ate when I wanted and saw what I wanted. Did I see everything in the time allotted of course not but that gives me a great reason to travel to that area again.

If you haven't already check out this forum http://advrider.com and read some of the ride reports. They cater to more of the adventure type bikes and aren't always HD friendly but I've learned a lot and have picked up some great tips.

Anyway, safe travels!

-Keith
