The Crooked Road.
I have traveled RT 58 NUMEROUS times from VA BEACH to Weber City VA, though I was not always on a bike. I am retired Navy I used to come home for leave and would travel 58 as one of the routes to come home(along with 460 and I81).
The best time to ride 58 would be in the fall (foliage colors) or mid summer (mountain laurel blooming). From Weber City VA its 2 lane to Bristol VA then you can get on I81 to Abingdon VA then its back to 2 lane until you are outside Stuart VA. then it pretty much 4 lane to Suffolk VA.
Things to see and do along 58: 1 the scenary - Abingdon to Stuart mountains and small towns.
Stuart to Suffolk, still some mountains and small towns but it starts to flatten out. 2 - BLUEGRASS music - GALAX, HILLSVILLE, MEADOWS OF DAN, STUART, almost all these towns have pay and free live bluegrass (just do a search for the crooked road music site). Meadows of Dan VA at Christopher's pizza live music every SAT night and SUN afternoon(free) and good food and ice cream). Hillsville has one of the largest flea markets in the country labor day weekend, live music, food, (if you cant find it at this flea market... it probably does not exist). FOX CREEK LEATHERS is in INDEPENDENCE VA, stop by there great people with a great product. Meadows of Dan VA - eat at the Mountain Top restuarant and you can gas up there. Good place to jump on the BRP there too. That is Patrick county Va. on their website they have a list of community events - almost always a festival going there. The MORRISETT winery has live music and tours pretty cool place. Hotels are mostly locally owned places from Abingdon to Stuart. You gotta stop at Lover's Leap overlook outside Meadows of Dan Great view and a few picnic tables(grab a burger to go at the mountain top and stop at the overlook). Not on 58 but short ride is FLOYD VA they have a music fest every year called FLOYDSTOCK. Lots of different music there. This 58 route would be a good ride. Lots of other items to see, Martinsville, South Boston etc..Hope this helps.
Tony
