I focused my first response on Skyline itself. There are fantastic riding roads all through the area. If you go further west on 211, past Luray, there is a biker store called Outlanders at Egypt Bend Road. Good folks there, but I don't recommend eating there. (Eat at the Colemans BBQ before you get there.)
If you take Egypt Bend to the right then turn onto Camp Roosevelt Road and then onto Fort Valley Road, it is a beautiful ride and takes you up to Rte 55 near Front Royal. On Camp Roosevelt Road there is a great overlook with a great view of the Shenandoah River Valley and the Blue Ridge further to the east. The northern stretch of it runs along Passage Creek, a stocked trout stream.
Anyway, as you can probably tell, I can go on forever about great rides in Northern Virginia!
don't know about Outlanders but I agree about the routes. There are some really great roads outside of Skyline itself. I actually don't care for riding Skyline Drive because it's usually so crowded.
Taking the auto train from Sanford, Fl to Lorton Va and we plan to head west to Charlottesville, Va and visit Monticello then head up the Skyline Drive. Anyone have any suggestions on places to visit off the Skyline or points of interest on the Skyline. Hope to do some hiking and just do a lot of riding before we head back in about a week. Thanks for your help.
Have fun on your trip. Just a little warning about Amtrak.
Please make sure they double strap your bike on the front. don't ask how I know that. Lost trip, a LOT of money, four months later... I got my bike back.
I'm not trying to deter you from using Amtrak. They were great by standing behind their mistake. Just a heads up. That's all.

Wow. Thanks for putting it out there. I've never heard of a problem with the train until now. Suppose that's a good sign.
To OP... Here is a SD/BRP/Smokey Mtn map that may be useful. It includes a bunch of the more popular stops, accomodations, etc. The map points have links to websites and GPS coordinates that will put you on the door if you roll that way...

More information than you can imagine and most every road from the skyline dr in Va. Down the blue ridge parkway To north Ga. And all the roads in between. Got mine and can't wait to use them. Weathers getting warm in Fl. And should be getting better in the mountains shortly
Maybe not a must see but I would highly advise to stop at one of the wayside areas and get there blackberry milkshake. A bit on the expensive side but very good. A must for us each year. I wish I could remember the name of the trail. Diamond something I think towards the southern end. Nice little hike to a waterfall. We saw a bear on it.
Given that you will be in Charlottesville, vA - at the northern end of the Blue Ridge and south end of the skyline... I would choose to head south on the Blue ridge before heading north on the skyline. The Blue Ridge is maintained by the Feds, is 45 MPH and smooth - have ridden the full length several times (last summer most recent). The skyline is 35mph and maintained by the state and not smooth (last year). For those suggesting the dragon, etc. You will be 400 + miles from the dragon via the blue ridge so not sure if you are planning overnights - if so, head south. While in Charlottesville, visit the HD dealer in Staunton... They helped out a buddy while we were on a trip from New England - he lost his primary bearing and they had his bike on a lift within 15 minutes of pulling in, and we were on the road 2 hours later...
Virginia has certain roads that are designated "Scenic Byways." They are all worth riding. VDOT will send you a free map of the byways. You can order it online: http://www.virginiadot.org/programs/prog-byways.asp
I hope you enjoy riding in our beautiful commonwealth.
