They work, you just need a little experience on how the load will shift over time and miles. A degree in structural engineering doesn't hurt either. And yes the net is nice over the top to keep all the loose bits not loose.
"Give me enough bungees, and I will get the OP secured to the back of my bike" ... Sounds like the beginning of a challenge :>)

I just came back from a 2700 mile trip, and the bungee cargo nets kept my gear rock solid. I've had them for years and never thought about replacing them because they're not stretched and still work very well.

I have been using the nomarr straps (bungees) for the last couple of years, they are great for the bike and no metal hooks to scratch the bike. They are also excellent for ATV's and boats. The web site is www.nomarrstrap.com. Last year my wife was in crutches for one of our bike trips, we put her crutches in a gun case and strapped them onto the luggage rack, they stayed in place with no marks on the bike or rack.

I use bungee on all my trips and have never had a problem. I use 4 of them for my bag on the luggage rack. They are rubber on one end so it does not scratch the luggage rack

I like the cargo nets that have the plastic hooks that can be removed, then placed where most needed. You can make the load tighter, and the plastic hooks have eyes on them so straight bungees can be hooked on top of the nets.

Never a problem with bungees but they have to be used right. We had a guy get killed 3 years ago in my area who had his jacket tied to the seat with bungees. The leather came lose and got sucked into the belt drive.

I kringe every time I see a girl passenger with her sweatshirt tied around her waste flapping in the breeze at high speed.

I tossed all my bungees after trying ROK straps.
http://www.rokstraps.com/

They have bungy type material at one end so you get constant tension. I have no interest in the company or product, just a happy user who found an alternative to the bungee cord.
