Bike storage in Pittsburgh
I live in the UK but have undertaken a 2 week tour in the US every year for the past 5 years. 3 years ago I decided to buy my own bike out there (a friend bought one as well) so we could do one way trips and in so doing ultimately tour all the way around North America. We started out in Tucson and bikes are currently in Atlanta.
We have toured the smokies area a lot and last year rode on to DC and back. This year we are planning on winding up to Nashville and then on to Pittsburg.
Any ideas of places to see and rides to do along that direction would be most appreciated. What I could really do with is some local knowledge from Pttisburgh concerning bike storage.
The arrangement we have in Atlanta has worked brilliantly, we engaged with an Indy bike service dealer. He charges us for the storage and makes sure the bikes are ready for us when we turn up. The rest of the year the bikes are pretty much parked up in a corner minding their own biz. We always give 2 to 3 months notice as to when we will be out.
If anyone could recommend such a place that would be great. Ideally located as close to the International airport as poss. Thanks
Also, Nashville to Pittsburgh has endless destinations and great riding throughout. 555 in Southern Ohio comes to mind if you like real curvy roads. Check out West Virginia riding also. There are a few books published on that topic. State route 20 out of Prineton W.V. is a favorite north south ride.
Around the Pittsburgh area there is a variety of riding from forests to farms to industrial areas. Route 30 (The Lincoln Highway) From say Greensburg Pa. to Gettysburg Pa. is an awesome way to see the Pa. Ridges. Lots of sites along the way.
We found a smallish independent motorcycle workshop. He charges us $800 per year to store both bikes. We generally only come out once a year late August / early September. We will always give a few months notice so they can store the bikes in a dark corner and not concern themselves we are going to turn up any time and expect to ride straight away. If the keep them secure and on a battery tender and turn them over as and when required that would be great.
As we get towards the time we are coming out we will mail them with a list of things we would want doing, typically oil change, service, tires on occasion - basic stuff like that but there may also be a list of things that went wrong from the previous ride that didn't force a stop and repair whilst touring.
Ideally a shop located near the international airport or on convenient public transport from the airport so we don't have to take cabs. When we arrive we want to climb on and ride straight away so would want to see the bikes parked up and good to go - but as we will give very good advance notice this really shouldn't be an issue.
Realistically this will be a one year deal as next year we will probably push on to Boston, but if we find enough to do in the area we will hang about for 2 years (2 off 2 week tours).
In terms of your recommended rides / areas, I will study that with keen interest. Last year we rode from Atlanta to DC and spent a lot of time in West Virginia (in the mountain areas) and LOVED it there.
Thanks again
Stuart
