You got time for a shakedown cruise? See for yourself what 200 to 400 miles feels like in a day. The better shape you're in, the more you can stand. Get your gut and back muscled up.

Unlike some earlier advice, getting off every 50 or 75 miles for a few minutes helped me do long runs....after about an hour of riding. Just long enough to get some blood flow back. Walk, stretch, have a drink of water or g-aide. Fill up every other stop. Done 500 to 700 miles that way in a day. Your mileage may vary

the air circulator pad that harley sells works well. helps keep your butt cool and dry. when you do stop for gas, take a leak, drink some water/gatorade, and walk around some. stop any time you feel like it. i like to roll out at first light with a full tank of gas. get your riding done before the hottest part of the afternoon. motel, swim pool, nice supper, and a good night's sleep under a cold a/c will have you ready to go at first light the next day.

Lots of good tips. If you have time to do a 200-300 mile day before then do so. See if you can make adjustments for whatever is sore after that.

Basics:
Ear plugs on days you'll be on the interstate for more than an hour. It is amazing how much less of a headache you get.
Good underwear, I prefer Under Armour boxer briefs.
Sunblock, apply more every fuel stop.
Stay hydrated.
Start early in the day.
Walk and stretch at each stop.

Thanks reacher, the 200-300 mile test, going to try this for sure! Never even thought about the underwear. Everyone has been very helpful, glad to have joined!

One thing that helps is to take an Advil or Aleve in the morning!

I plan for 400-500 mile days when I'm touring, although I have done up to 600 in one day. I have a trip planned for next month to northern Idaho, and one leg is from Beaver UT to Boise ID - 580 miles. I know how much riding I can handle in one day, that's what you need to figure out. Everyone has their own limits of comfort. You really need to get out and test yourself to see what a long day in the saddle is for you. The time to find out that you need a better seat is not when you're 1100 miles from home.

Kind of anxious myself to do a long run on this bike. Not wanting to rush my riding partner you see over there. Ease him into long distance mode. Did many 600 and + mile days on the old 1100 honda. This bike should let me do that no worries, I hope. Better ride, bigger windshield, cruise... Problem, getting off by myself for 3 or so days

Road King hit the biggie that I do. Stop more often for just a few minuets and walk a couple of laps around the bike. I like to park at the far end of a rest area parking lot to get the blood circulating again with the walk to the can.

Also, since you're heading for some serious heat, soak your shirt in the rest room sink, then cover with a vented jacket. It will feel like air conditioning. I use those Harley bags that mount to the rear saddle bag guards. I use two squirt bottles full of water. One to drink from, the other to wet down my shirt.

I wear a helmet 99% of the time and on road trips in the summer take a 1/2 and a fullface for riding in the rain.
