i know...hardly a road trip...but did,nt know where elae to post this
hi guy,s
were coming over to houston on thursday this week...for 4 weeks.( from England )..for another visit before our semi-permanent move in oct / nov.
on one of the saturday,s we are there we ( wife and i ) are going to hire a harley from
republic H-D..and want to do a ride...we plan on picking the bike up as early as possible
and returning before closing the same day..
you guy,s got any ideas where we could possibly go...within those time restraints
Head South towards Kemah a lot to do in that area restaurants amusment park on the water, shops and such.... Then head South on 146 towards Galveston, ride the Seawall, hit the Historic Strand area and head back up 45 that ought to be a decent ride in the time alloted.
Remember Houston is HOT this time of year and there is a lot of traffic. Once you get away from Down town it will be better riding but Houston in general sucks!!
Do what Houstonians do and get the hell out of Houston on the weekends. Rent a bike from a dealer in San Antonio or Austin and ride the Hill Country. It's worth the extra drive.
My reference to Houston and the area is living here for 23 years and doing a fair amount of driving.
I know your saying you only have a Saturday dedicated to a ride.
The positive is a rare cool front is moving in and the weather should be in the 90s!
That's it for the positives.
The negatives are a whole bunch of traffic. And if the weather is nice (our weather-men cant predict weather so its iffy) then the beach and Kemah will be packed.
Just my opinion but I think the traffic just may be on par w/ good old London based on my few visits. Only here we don't have the fantastic railway system and everyone hits the roadway.
If your interested in some Texas history the San Jacinto battlesite is close by and may be a good ride just for the afternoon and Kemah is close.
Hate to be so negative but I used to ride on the weekend w/ a group of guys and gals and we gave it up as we just don't feel safe anymore on the weekend or really any given week day!
Its a shame...Texas has good roads...just so crowded.
You all asked for ride examples, no a lecture on traffic!!
Check out heading south to Galveston then west along the coast to the Freeport area then north on 288 back to Houston.
Cool little beach scenery type ride. May take just under 4-5 hours...
