The stump pulling stock cam (SE255) combined w/ crappy-azz SE-lifters (C) and too stout of valve springs are known as the root cause of destroying the 110" motor.
I was very fortunate that my 2009 CVO Roadie came stock with the better SE lifter (B). At 26K the MoCo replaced them free under warranty with another set of SE lifters (B). And then I replaced at 42K with aftermarket lifter, aftermarket cams, conical valve springs, entirely brand new parts throughout the motor, HD Street Performance SE110" Heads, DarkHorse treatment on the crank when upgrading to my current SE117" Pro Race motor build.
It does Sux, that you pay top dollar for the cream of the crop Harley Davidson motorcycle. And then the MoCo puts cheap AZZ parts in the heart of the motorcycle engine.
Greedy, greedy, greedy to save and make $$$ for the stockholders!
The Comp sprocket is and does go sour regardless of what size motor from 96" to 124"+ motors.
Hindsight: now folks can have a built motor or a drop in motors, and start smilin again!
37K on my 15, lifters failed at 27K taking with it most of the stage 2 components , all replaced under warranty with upgraded lifters ,oil pump, plates. Runs perfect.
I was hearing some strange sounds at the end of 2018 with just under 18,000 miles and even the wife had asked about some strange sounds at the end of the season. I bought it used with 11,000 miles with the dealer maintenance records.
Had the dealer open it up to inspect and one of the crappy lifters was going bad and we caught it in time. So we replaced the lifters, push rods, pistons, cams, headers, pipes, cam plate and added the HD high capacity oil pump. So far in 2019 we have about 9000 miles and it runs strong and sounds great.
I think if you listen to your bike when riding you will catch a change in the sound and performance before a major failure happens.
The wife and I are very happy with the improved performance too!
My 12 CVO Skunk Roadglide dropped a lifter at 18k cracking the cases on one side. ESP paid the dealership, I got them to swap in a 120R which has been remarkable, and held up fantastic after a few minor tweaks I made at 122 miles after installation. Such as new lifters, cams, valve springs and a Dyno.
At 35k, I'm still running the original comp behind the 120R and the 110 parts are collecting dust in the corner of my garage.
75,000 miles on my 2010 110 with headwork, larger TB, larger injectors, D&D Fatcat 2:1 and a Woods 408 cam. Replaced lifters at 50,000. Otherwise its been a reliable and fun engine. Still puts a smile on my face when I rip it.
About 55K I started hearing the clicking. It would come and go. They wouldn't do anything until it was constant so at about 62K it was a LOUD clicking "That better?" They replaced everything that oil touches in the engine and put adjustable push rods in. ESP is your friend.
