This topic has been debated on this forum ad nauseum since I joined 17 years ago. There are good service depts and bad service departments. I always have the same tech work on my bikes, he does a good job and the price is reasonable. I rather spend my free time riding than wrenching. That might change once I retire but if you maintain your own bikes because you like doing it, thats one thing. Doing it because there is no good service tech in your area is a different ballgame.
What are most doing?
I can speak for myself, and what I say is for "piece of mind" in regards to warranty, let the dealer complete the 1K service.
I would:
Order a factory service manual.
Check the 1K service work upon return.
Especially the critical fastener section.
Then while on warranty, do the 5K, 10K etc. (using dealership purchase Harley products) yourself and document your work.
I could also say that a dealership relationship has value.
Yet, from this thread's comment above, as to what they may tell you (2.5K oil changes, no synthetic oil, must wear only Harley branded clothing), well, ask this forum for advice.
