Just completed my 1K Service, I changed all my fluids with Mobile 1, going to set up a service appointment so they can do the rest, this should save me $$$$$.
……not letting a “technician” at the dealership touch my bike……
unless you know the tech, and the quality of his work, I wouldn’t let anyone touch my bike.
last year when I took my new RKS for a 1k service, they over filled the trans, over inflated the tires, dinged up the clutch lever and air cleaner cover and didn’t adjust the primary belt correctly. Once bitten twice shy.
The cost of a service manual and a few tools is worth the cost of not getting pissed at how some nitwit treated your bike.
Most techs assigned to do service at Harley dealers are the lowest skilled and lowest paid in the shop. The fact that the service managers let bikes with obvious faults go out says that they don't care about their customers and have no sense of professionalism.
Plus, the shops charge top dollar and skip work that they bill for, like checking critical fasteners. In my case, I discovered that all my handlebar clamp bolts were loose after getting the bike back from the 1K service.
I'm never going back to the dealer, and was lucky to find a great indy for future service.

I started doing my own basic services many years ago because of sloppy, they don't seem to GAF work ... drive belt never needs adjusting between tire changes which is at least annually and about 15K on average...I will let them do the major stuff I'm not equipped to do ... I have saved so may thousands of dollars and it's done correct with no messes to clean up
I perform all the maintenance on all my rides. I purchase my first new bike from the dealership and part of the purchase was the 1K free service. What the heck. The time has come to do the 2nd oil change. Everything was fine until it was time to remove the oil filter. It so tight, I had to use a 3/8" breaker bar to loosen the oil filter.

What are most doing ?
I did all three holes myself at 500 miles and let the dealer do everything else, just if ever a warranty question. One dealer that I called to set up the appointment for the 1,000 mile said that he never heard of anyone doing that before. He also said that HD uses break in oil and not to change the oil that soon. No, HD doesn’t use break in oil from the factory. Needless to say, I didn’t make an appointment at that dealership.

There is only one good dealerships in the entire country that has good folks and does it right mine
i feel bad for the rest of you
Not sure who you use, but Battle Creek Harley Davidson treated me right. In 2012 the voltage regulator failed on my 2012 CVO RG. There was not one in the state. HD had just issued a recall for that. HD said a week to get the part. Took one off a new bike and sent me on my way.
My local Dealer, Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson is great.
