Default How hot?

Just picked up my 08 FXDSE two weeks ago and have about 1200 miles on it. My question is how hot should it run. Mine compared to co-workers Harleys is much hoter. Their engine you can lay your hand on and mine you can barley touch. "Riding on 60 degree air temp." I plan to purchase oil temp gauge when I take it in for 1k service. Talked to dealer and they said it is fine. Does anyone know when some aftermarket exchaust and tuners will be available? So far I love the bike. I got the blue one. It does have two small oil leaks already, nothing major just the sending unit on the right side case and where the wires come out of the left side case. Niether one leaks much yet, just enough to see the dust collect to it. I quess you could say it is justhorse sweat. Any info would be nice. New to the forum.

Good for you Lenny! I have seen 230 degrees at the most with this 110 SERK. At that point, the engine is plenty hot so I don't think that is too bad. "Laying a hand" on this engine when it is totally heated up is a very short duration inspection as with most any air cooled engine. Maybe theirs were not totally heated up? Not only that - you will see less running heat as the engine gets broken in - about 5000 - 6000 miles!

The "birth certificate" they ran on my '08 SERK says the operating range of the engine temp is 230 to 300F.
Mine was reading 261F at the proper testing sequence.

Mine ran much warmer before I put the SERT and pipes on, that seemed to help quite a bit. From what I have read it is not uncommon to be in the 230 degree range.

I actually had 265 on my oil temp gauge before installing an oil cooler and adjusting the SERT mixture. Now I get 210.
