Bike sits for a week or 2 due to the crappy weather of late and when I go to start it, it cranks for what seems long enough but then eventually will die after the bike refuses to start. I do smell gas and see smoke rings blowing out the exhuast while attempting to start but it just won't fire. Do I always need the choke way out all the time to start it in the summer on first start of the day or maybe half way in during the warmer months? Seems like as soon as I jump the battery, it starts right away. Maybe just a new battery is needed? Fairly new/used bike purchased late last year so I'm still learning the tricks to getting these bikes right on. It is a 1340cc 99 FXR-3 bike.Thanks
usually you pull the choke all out when the engine is cold no matter what. as far as the battery put a full charge on it then take it to your deaker and have it tested
Modern batteries can be moody things! If you don't have one get a battery minder, to maintain its charge while not using it. I learned the hard way when the battery of a six month old bike died after a short period of not using it.
Also modern electronic engine management systems will not operate if there is a small drop of battery voltage. So the starter may be happy turning the engine over with a low voltage, but the electronics will not fire the engine. (I had this problem with my BMW bike recently) Older bikes will start with a much larger voltage drop if the battery is low.
You could try jump starting the bike using a car battery. If it leaps into life you know where the problem is!
