I am both new to this forum (1st post yesterday in "New Members") and a new owner of a '06 CVO Fatboy in the Nebula Yellow Pearl and Cobalt Blue color combo, though it still has to be shipped from Arkansas to me in Central TX. I will be owner #2, and the first owner already made some changes from the stock configuration, so I am already thinking about the changes and upgrades I want to make.
I love the look of the flush mount gas cap and fuel gauges, but wonder why there are 50 different model numbers (exaggeration) for what appears to be very similar sets. The catalog shows that Part #62818-06D is the correct one for fitment on my SE2, but I cannot really see differences in some of the other part #'s. Kuryakyn has a cap/gauge set that, even though not as low profile, that will fit many more bikes. So, is Harley just making it look so specialized that they can charge more? I have been through the forum looking at some of the threads on this subject, but couldn't see where there is any definitive answer to this question. Are there just so many different gas tank and electrical setups that it forces Harley to make it as seamless as possible to install each version? Also noted all over the forum was the quality issue of the gauge, that the earlier versions (red LED's) was prone to quick failure, but that the part number ending in "D" points to a 4th gen of the part. Does anyone know if quality of the set has improved enough to justify the price for the look?
...oh, in addition, does anyone who has these know if there are any numbers or markings anywhere on the parts to tell you which part # it actually is..
My fuel gauge has been replaced 3 time already and still does not work, if I had it to do over there would be a cup holder there instead of a worthless fuel gauge. Sorry don't know about the part numbers, but just trying to inlighten you of problems with the gauge.
Welcome to the site and to the CVO world. I had an 05 SEFB and absolutely loved it. With the right tune on the stock motor it would pull you right off the seat. Nice to see the previous owner didn't put an engine guard on yours either. Sleek look there. Will you be getting the windshield from him too? Your 2-1 look nice with that color combo.
My gas gauge worked but was very slow. It was also off by about 1/8 to the high side. Nothing terrible and very manageable but the look of the SEFB is classic. Suggest you wait a while before making changes. I kept mine as stock as possible and it always gathered a crowd.
Thanks, Mr. Wizard. He sold the windshield about a year ago, but the mounts are still in place, so I am sure I will hunt another one down at some point. He has and is including a passenger pillion and backrest so I shouldn't lose any riders when I twist the throttle. As to customizing versus stock...since the first owner has already made a few changes, I suspect I will make a few more. To my eye, and for a Fatboy, (maybe it is the color scheme), this is one really sleek looking bike, and begs me to make it even sleeker. This is why the look to flush mounts. Before I make any move I want to have it in my garage. I also want to make sure that any changes will still fit the "Feel" of the bike. And finally...research. I will never put something on that I know has a 75% failure rate...ultimately my reason for asking in the first place.
So, back to the questions I asked first...why does Harley have so many different configs of this essentially simple part? And for everyone who has gotten mad because theirs failed and posted about how unreliable the part is...are there 10 times as many who's work perfectly, and therefor say nothing?
Thanks to all, and I'll be hangin' around.
Chris

Yea thats the part#. I just put mine on my 06 SEFB last week. Really makes the lines so much smoother. As for worth the cost? It is a matter of choice. I cant really see a problem if you like the look. I bought mine from the stealer. Overpriced Yea. BUT I wanted it and thats what matters. If you can afford it what does it matter. As for function. I have never used a fuel gauge I go by mileage anyways.
BTW
Nice bike. Mine is the Autumn Haze.
I love riding this bike. Deff a good choice from you.
