Default Another Suspension Question

my 73 FLH front suspension klunks on big bumps and is bottoming out. Actually have a small dent on the top of my fender I will have to fix. How do I take care of the problem. Should I get new springs, heavier oil or both? Thanks.

Simplest things first. Drain and refill with the proper amount for your year. Is it a oil cooler that is hitting the fender? You can re-position it to give more clearance.

No, it's the bar between the spotlights that runs under the headlight. I went out and got some 20 wt fork oil and changed the fork oil. It feels much better. I'll try to get the dent out over the weekend and see if it does it again. Thanks.

Hitting the fender sounds like somebody may have left out the spacers on top the springs sometime in the past and she's riding low in the front.

Changing the fork oil seemed to do it. I pounded out the dent in the fender with a softball and a rubber mallet. Rode it around all day yesterday with no problems. Brings back a lot of memories. My first two HDs were shovelheads.

how much oil did you drain out? Was it low or empty?

I didn't check to see how much came out, but it was leaking a little. In fact, I ordered the seals, etc., that I would need for a 73. They came yesterday and I changed them. The only problem is, although my bike is a 73, the front end isn't. It looks to be a late 77 on. Anyway, I just have to put the nacelle and light bar back on. With my luck, it'll leak again. We'll see.
