With an unknown shovel ? What were you thinking ?.......
They can be pretty reliable but you need to go through the steps to get one there. 75's didn't have valve seals so a little smoke is common, what will tell the story is you drop a pipe and look into the port , valve guides oily it's going to need a little TLC.
Thanx.. will do that in the am. Did 77's have valve seals?
Been riding this now for 15 years lot of miles a lot around town still runs great get used to a little smoke on start up mine does till warms up run some good gas add little octane boost I prefer NOS brand pre mix it then put in tank. Maintainence is the key formula keep the shovel going keep up on oil changes and plugs. And other adjustments. And the bike will work out. Ride Safe. Wild Bill
After I got it going I took it for a little ride 5-7 miles (back in April) ran nice but smoked a bit out the rear cylinder and after it sat for about 10 minutes I couldn't believe the grapefruit size puddle of Red Line from the tranny... So after that I decided that I really didn't want to **** with it.. Iv'e got a lot going on with my 98 and just didn't want to deal with another build... So I called Scott who is friends with Joe's in Mechanicville (who is mainly a tuner) and was able to get Joe's to trailer my bike out to Scott.
So on the table or under the knife is the 77 and it looks like a complete valve job, Cleaning up the cylinders and a re-ring, Motor has newer wiseco's @9:1 so that's a good thing. Also had Scott ID the cam for me and it's a andrews A grind. seems to be a little to much bleed off for 9:1 so we decided on a andrews #2 cam. Little earlier ivc (43* to a 35*) but more lift. It will help the low end a little.... Now on to the Trans, the good thing is it's got a newer andrews gear set in it that Scott said looked very healthy but will need a new 4th gear bushing and seals.. Guaranteed me it won't leak again in my lifetime... I hope he's right....
So much for a plug and play purchase...
So today I spoke with him again and he now tells me it has a Rivera Primo Pro clutch in it.... Yeah!!! but who ever pressed it in the OEM basket must have bent it and stripped one of the studs Boooo..... So now I need that replaced as well.... Man this isn't what I bargained for.... After putting so much into my 98 it's going to be hard to scrape up the necessary funds for this one... Maybe I can sell my body or something......
So hopefully it will be home by the end of the month... Funny I expected "plug and play" and got "still plugging away".... My patience is truly being tested.... Not to mention my Wallet......

Yeah but first time you're out and car load at a light just sits there eyeballing the bike with that look it'll be worth it all. Nothing turns heads like the sound of a good looking shovel, evo & twinkies boys try but no cigar.

Without a doubt..... Even my wife is getting itchy (not bitchy, thank god)..........
Got up to Munnsville Friday morning picked up my 77 Shovelhead and as expected it runs flawlessly with no leaks, I'm really happy with it. The overall rebuild consisted of new rings complete valve job. Scott even machined the guides to accept valve seals so I shouldn't have any issues there for a long time. Pulled out the A cam and installed a Andrews #2 cam.... I really like the way it pulls, acceleration is smooth and effortless. It fits the compression better. My CCP is 155 pounds. Couple that with the S&S carb and it's, it's a nice machine
Gearing might be a little low though, seems to windout a bit at 65 but I guess I'll just do 60 that's all. It's not a race motor. Scott asked me if I wanted I know the motor dyno numbers to see where it was and I told him I didn't have the money at the time but the nice guy that he is he did it anyways. I was very surprised and very happy with that, as it was a nice gift from him. The numbers came out very respectable for 74" Shovelhead, 72/68 TQ/HP...
The ride itself isn't the most comfortable. I'm definitely going to have to get another seat and maybe soften up the rear end a little bit. It handles great though and it goes down the road so smooth, It's a fun bike. It ain't going to be a Touring bike but it definitely will be an awesome around town bar Hopper. Might even go to some six or eight inch mini apes on it all the cables are long enough so it shouldn't be an issue. In fact at one time I think there was Apes on this thing cause these cables are so long it could probably handle 14-16 inch Apes no problem. Attached is a little clip of how it runs, I'm really liking it....
Well off to the Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse. Lot of nice bikes up there.........
