Luke, what's the cylinder walls look like? Are they gouged or tore up badly? Also, didn't you mention in your first post the engine just had a fresh top end job??
I believe a rod bearing went out nuking that rod. It's welded itself to the crank pin. In the pic your seeing just a piece of it. The connecting rods are a closed end set up. The crank pin slides through them and thrust washers, then a flywheel on each side.
Like mentioned before, unless you've split engine cases to replace rods and crank pin before, I would recommend a shop do this. You've got the hard part done, pulling it out of the bike.
You also want to look real close for any signs of a crank in those cases. The damage done here can cause this. If there is, the engine is junk.
Hopefully after i dig deep we will find the culprit needa make me a piston removal tool first, geeez now i need wood tools also... will see what i come up with! Probly gonna try beating on her with the rubber mallet somemore first its just the caveman in me letting off steam ...but Gently!!!
Gonna try to answer all your questions and get more pics soon!!!
How about 2 piece of threaded rod long enough to go thru the cylinder/head bolts holes and stick up 3-4 inches. A piece of flat stock or angle iron drilled to accept the threaded rod. A block of wood that would fit inside the cylinder and stick out the top by 3-4".
A few heavy washers & nuts for the rod and you would have your own press to remove the piston from the cylinder. And yes, beating it with a hammer would relieve more tension.
Feels like front rod is broke off cause it wiggles around loosely and back rod seems to still be attached and did a back bent but is still hanging on!!!

i would like to put my 2 cents in - for 20 years at least i have been using the RPLS rods ( made in japan ) have never found even one set out of spec - bought and used 100s of sets in each type, and have them in a evo Heratage stroker we have around the shop that make almost 100HP at the tire and has been together 10 years at least - no one drives it like a human being
the rod set in that shovel motor is a testament to the hang in performance of those rod sets, that i have experienced they did not brake they bent and nothing short is amazing - stock rods would have taken the cases completely out
MY experience with the japan rods is different then others that seems to be the case but untill i see them brak off its still going to be the go to ones i use

I can attest to that claim... My old iron head sporty back in the day lunched a rod sending out the bottom of the cases at 65 mph.

Well, I am glad to hear you say that John as my shovel motor has just been built up with a set of the Japanese RPLS rods! My engine builder liked the look, feel and precision of them....
