the heads are early the center fins are tall - the 4 and 5 on the two heads is the casting month year follows -
the gasket indent is a carry over from the internal oiling engines 1948 to 1954 - that oiled the top end through the jugs into the early panheads
later blocks still used the passage in the front head location so they could drill the oil passage for hyd lifters that came after -- the oiling systems in the early engines was always under some sort of up dates, as the oil itself was changing and so was the power out put
Been awhile since i've been on here,thuis thread is very interesting ,been 2 years since my 82 shovel seized on me,discovered oil sender was cracked so not all oil was being pumped up to heads ,Ive yet ti tear it down,kicking myself,i love that bike rebuilt motor and tranny and learned most of what i know right here,a lot from TwiZted Biker,Thank you very much btw,so i really hope for you this has a positive outcome,as Shovels rule!!! I bougfht a new Road Glide,havent wrenched in 2 years its comfy, but missing 2 main things,The character of a shovel is by far no comparison,and the experience,even my lady misses that ole girl that would break down on side of road. Best part,i always knew how to fix it when I got home.look forward to seeing how this turns out,and i'll let ya know how mine is coming.
