Default Lifter Blocks.....

Can you use Evo lifter blocks and lifters in a 77, 74" shovel motor? If you can, what pushrods would I be able to use? Thanx.....

Your going to go that route look into Jim's or S&S shovel lifters, also Vulcan has updated hydraulics that use the stock shovel lifter blocks or complete kits.

Hey Twisted, Just so I understand this product from Vulcan. unlike the other kits out there, I don't have to upgrade the rockers cause I'm still using the external oil lines? also I'm only upgrading the lifters, block and pushrods to a roller lifter setup which will quiet down the lower end. At this point do I still use the shovel cam or do I upgrade the cam to an Evo cam? Thanx......

I put the Vulcan kit in my bike about 5,000 miles ago and you can use everything Shovelhead....you don't have to upgrade Rockers, oil lines or anything else. Bike runs nice and much more quiet running with Hydros than solids.

So I don't have to do with a roller cam? I always thought that when it came to solids or hydraulics that the cam was specific to the type of lifter....

Any of the 3 I mentioned are a direct replacement for the shovel ones , no rocker arm changes required and they still use the original oiling system. You use shovel cams and if you do go this route I suggest looking into Competition Cams VThunder series , they are made specifically for hydraulics but you do have to do high lift spring kits with a few of them. I ran one of those and the Jims lifters in my 88" shovel and it was quieter than most evos.

That's where a lot of valvetrain noise and performance issues comes from mismatched cam & lifter profiles. Run a hyd. cam with solid lifters it beats hell out of the lifter and it's noisy, hyd. lifters with a solids cam and you take a performance hit in lift and duration loss.

Roller rocker arms you need to pay attention to clearances inside the rocker covers

I installed the Jim's kit a few years back and my 82 is really quiet. You get evo style lifters and matched pushrods and everything just drops right in the stock blocks. The jims lifters have an evo style cup in the lifter so you have to use their pushrods. Really a nice improvement. Part#2411.
