How did you prevent the starter shaft from turning so you can unscrew the nut (left hand thread) in the end of the starter shaft? this nut holds the Bendix gear on. On my 1984 shovel there is a nut there. I am also trying to avoid removing the battery and starter etc.

Do NOT try this without disconnecting the battery! Pulling out on the bendix will complete the starter circuit, and it will spin. Your fingers would likely not survive this event.
