Hi guys. I have a 78 flh with an s&s 93 engine. How can I tell if I have the travel limited lifters? I’ve seen 2 different ways to adjust the pushrods depending on which lifter I have. Is there a safe way to do it if I don’t know?
I'm thinking you are asking if you have solids or hydraulics - there are different varieties of solid lifters and hydraulic lifters out there - if the adjuster is on the lifter - it is a solid - if you see a spring on the lifter cup - it is hydraulic - if the spring is hidden under the cup - inside the cup housing - it is a solid - a picture would let us know which you have since there are different styles of each - If solids - rotate front to compression stroke - adjust pushrod so that there is a little bit of drag when you spin the rod - repeat for rear - for hydraulics - rotate to compression stroke - loosen all the way - tighten until some drag is felt - then for most adjusters it is 4 turns tight - most rods collapse the lifter with 7 turns - I tend to collapse then down all the way - count the turns - then set the position to 1/2 total turns to bottomh

The reason I ask is s&s site has travel limited lifters as part of their procedure. If I’d read farther I’d have seen there is a way to tell. I’m just going to see if it bleeds down. They’re not solid.
hi mplecha
iam a newby to the HDs and have a 82flh...i recently did my pushrod adjustments and did them by the book.... took out the hydrolic unit ,cleaned it out then nipped up the adjustment then turned back the adjusting screw 1 1/2 turns...if you type in pushrod adjustment on the search button on the top page there is loads of info there or check out this youtube vid ..he does solids and hydrolics
I see what you are asking now - I have a set of S&S lifters in my 78 and I just turned down the adjusters 4 turns - (out of 7 total) - maybe I should check if they are the limited travel type - is there some advantage to this style of S&S lifter???
