My '80 has always done the backfire when I switch from run to lights. And, yes, as the switch wears it'll cut out as I ride.

its all good now, i have a new switch...... now to replace that socket head bolt,with a stud on the front exhaust that keeps coming loose, .... but they all do that,dont they! ha ha
