The recommendations on the Evos deserve consideration, and there ARE good deals out there.
Gotta admit tho - declining a 4K Shovel is hard to do. Gonna sit back, cool the impulses, and just weigh all of this first.
My opinion was based on what appears to be your current financial situation. $4k for a Shovel is good, but she will eat up another $4k in the first year/10k miles. Just a fact, most were rode hard and put away wet. Too many previous owners, too much hacking along the way. I nice Evo with 10k miles on the odometer and basically stock, and therefore unmolested, is very attainable. Good luck.

That's exactly what happened to me... Thought I was getting a very good deal @$4500. for a 77 FXE, turned out another $4200 to make it street worthy.... And that is the Truth.....
Not only that the difference in ride comfort is night and day...

we see them as great 3 or 4 bike and only a totally stock condition
cool to have one for 6 or 8 rides a year so the cost of owning is not crazy
And I think a Shovel is a Shovel... is a Shovel... AMF was just a way for the MoCo to stay viable for a time.. Oh, and Finance the EVO and even that other project that was dropped when AMF was Bought out[back]
Actually, If ya think about it, all Shovels are AMF in Reality..
Only the Generator Bottom was truly Non-AMF and even the E-Motor was due to AMF..
I consider it [AMF] a Non-Factor...
But, I agree on the mechanical assesment
AMF bought the company in 1969 they did not pay totally for the company till the start of 1972 < reason an add on sticker was sent to the dealers for 1972 and it was added to the gas tank - Harley would not let them use the logo AMF till they paid fully for the company
in 1981 ***** bought the company back and he developed the evo. and the FXWG then the softail it made Harley what it has become, or it would have been gone like the rambler
they were seeing throw away as a good alternative to rebuild able
I wonder how that is really working out for them and the dealer network who wont even work on evos per instruction from the top
Dealers with experience tec work on EVO. Some dealers won't. Try to get a 10 year old honda worked on cash only up front if you can get them to do it. I have a 1996 EVO Harley Deal is Happy to work on it and they know what they are doing.

I believe it is well documented when development of the EVO and the Nova Projected began and were funded..
I doubt the EVO was designed and brought to Production in 3 Years... But Maybe??
The "new owners" chose to pursue the EVO over Nova... supposedly because they could Not afford Both!! Easy to Believe..
I don't think Willie Designed much more than some cosmetics or Styling Cues borrowed from People already using such "styles"
He, Like Beals, prolly put alot of Money into it tho!!

some of the Harley dealers will have to give raises to the mechanics if the 15 dollar an hour wage goes into place
but you might be right they know what they are doing
but I own a shop surrounded by 3 of them 15 min in any direction and we are not impressed
