in my bike shop at least once a year we find that a bike has been re wired with romex solid black and white house wire, must be the same electrical suppy place / in the 2 weeks i am doing this we still be learning stuff
Funny You mention this.....I just started a total Rewire on Victor and just as you said, EVERY wire on this thing is Black, Not a single primary color on it. It's gonna get exciting..... Thank God for wiring schematics. Starting from the Back end to the front. That reminds me, Can anyone show me a Picture of where the front Terminal board attaches on the triple tree. The PO didn't have one when he started this Abortion?..... 71- 72 FX, none of my manuals are very clear on this.
the early flat sides were hard wired to 2 boards one in the nacelle one under the coil that is the easiest wire harness to install for a big twin keeping it close to original
the 70 on was more plug and play type using plastic boards not happy about coming apart then not happy when they were put back together staying connected
ultima sells a fits all harness that every wire is labeled and the small box that connects everything has the horn and start relays and directional blinker built in the best choice fool proof install
Thanks, He's Rusty and Crusty, and I'm discovering parts that cover years 70 to 73.... so I have no illusions of getting him back to original at all.
I have the original Rear terminal board in place and it's a mess. But the PO didn't use a Board up front, and if Vic never sees another year correct part replaced on him, he WILL have a correct wiring harness. I've got all 11 colors, in hand and I'm knee deep in it now. I've rooted around inside the Nacell, and I'm not finding any holes anywhere the Board might mount to, and I still need to watch My headlamp bucket clearance. so if anybody has a Pic of where it is supposed to go. Life would be Grand......
the relay is this one or that one the evo style is stronger then the flat side relay -- this keep the system from the starter run on issue - with the seat on and no tools in a gas station
the plug and play board attaches to the right side of the top tree but if the top tree is an after market no holes will be drilled and taped with threads
AC or DC makes no difference whatsoever.
If you go into an electrical supply company asking for wire they will ask "How much amps?" and "How much voltage?" They will not ask if it's AC or DC because it makes no difference whatsoever.
If you need wire to handle high amps they will sell you large gauge wire.
If you need wire to handle high voltage they will sell you wire with thick insulation.
The wire will not specify "For AC only" (or DC only)
The equations for current, voltage and power do not take into account AC or DC because that doesn't make any difference.
Also there is no set amps a certain gauge wire will carry...a 10 gauge wire can carry 55 amps for chassis wiring...30 amps with 60C insulation...35 amps with 75C insulation...40 amps with 90C insulation...and 15 amps for power transmission....and all these numbers change if the wire is in a bundle.

Apples and Oranges... sort of... But, My '74 - 74" has No Boards or distribution points... everything goes in the most direct route to it's destination... by Color Code, so it is Easy to trouble shoot if necessary.. ie, the Yellow and White headlight wires, go directly from the switch housing ['73 - '81] to the headlight..etc...
If you want a Colorcode ID for custom runs, LMK, I Have one..

Thanks, I will use the proper colors throughout, and I'm not totally sold on the front board, but I'll have a new one in hand if all goes well. I've never seen so many crimp splices in a single wire run in my life...and I restore Old IH Tractors as a Hobby so crimp is my Middle name. You Guys Rock, Once more into the Breech lads!
